Validating Mendelian Genetics

Problem Set 1:
In the garden pea, yellow cotyledon color is dominant to green, and inflated pod shape is
dominant to the constricted form. Considering both of these traits jointly in self-fertilized
dihybrids, the progeny appeared in the following numbers:
193 green, inflated
184 yellow constricted
556 yellow, inflated
61 green, constricted
A. Construct a Punnet’s square and Fork line diagram.
B. Construct a Chi-square table which shows the computation using Chi-square analysis.
C. What are the null and alternative hypothesis?
D. Do the genes (genotypes) above assort independently?
Problem Set 2:
A dominant gene "A" governs the production of purple anthocyanin pigment in sea
urchin and its recessive allele "a" produces red pigment. A dominant gene "Hl" controls the
development of long spikes and its recessive allele "hl" produces shorter spikes. A dihybrid
purple, long spike sea urchin is test crossed (backcrossed with a parent recessive for both traits)
and produces:
73 purple, hairy
12 purple, hairless
75 green, hairless
9 green, hairy
A. Construct a Punnet’s square and find the phenotypic and genotypic ratio.
B. Construct a Chi-square table which shows the computation using Chi-square analysis.
C. What are the null and alternative hypothesis?
D. Do the genes (genotypes) above assort independently?
