QUESTION 1 (HCI JC2 BT1 07 / Q2)

Fig 2.1 shows the electron micrograph of a chloroplast.

Fig 2.1

(a) Name the structures labelled A and B and for each structure, state its function in the
process of photosynthesis.
[4]

(b)(i) Name the main substance present in the structure labelled C.

[1]

(b)(ii) How is this substance formed?

In an investigation to study the light-independent reaction of photosynthesis using a
unicellular green alga, the amounts of glycerate-3-phosphate (GP) and ribulose
bisphosphate (RuBP) in photosynthesising cells were measured under different
environmental conditions.

Fig. 2.1 shows the effect of reducing carbon dioxide concentration on the amounts of GP
and RuBP in the photosynthesizing cells in the presence of light.

(c) With reference to Fig. 2.1,

(i) Why is there twice the of GP as compared to RuBP when the carbon dioxide
concentration is 1.0%?

[1]

(ii) Explain the rise in the amount of RuBP after the carbon dioxide concentration is
reduced

[2]

(iii) Explain why the relative amount of GP does not reach zero.

With reference to Fig 2.2,

(i) Why was the carbon dioxide used radioactively labelled?

[1]

(ii) Explain how the lack of light caused the amount of radioactively labelled GP to
rise.

[3]

(iii) Suggest what caused the amount of radioactively labelled glucose to decrease
after the light was switched off.

Fig. 2.1 shows the relationship between CO2 assimilation rate and increasing light intensity
in a plant, when carbon dioxide concentration is not a limiting factor.

Fig. 2.1
(a) Explain why the CO2 assimilation rate levels off at higher light intensity.

[3]

(b) Explain why the CO2 assimilation rate is negative at the lowest light intensity.
