Russia plans safety corridor for Indians,
to investigate student’s death in Kharkiv
NEW DELHI: Russia is working to put in
place “humanitarian corridors” for
the safe evacuation of Indian nation-
als stranded in conflict zones in east-
ern Ukraine and will conduct an
investigation into the death of an
Indian student in Kharkiv, Russian
ambassador-designate Denis Alipov
said on Wednesday.
The evacuation of some 4,000 Indi-
ans stuck in Kharkiv, Sumy and other
conflict zones in eastern Ukraine has
become the top priority of the Indian
government following the death of
21-year-old medical student Naveen
Shekharappa Gyandagoudar on Tues-
day. The Russian side hopes to have
humanitarian corridors in place “as
soon as possible” so that Indians in
these conflict zones can be moved to
Russian territory, Alipov told a virtual
briefing.
Alipov offered his “deepest condo-
lences” over the death of Gyandagou-
dar and conveyed his sympathy to the
student’s family and the Indian
nation. “Russia will do everything it
possibly can to ensure the safety of
Indians in conflict zones,” he said,

NEW DELHI: India’s manufacturing sec-
tor activities expanded in February as
output and new orders grew at accel-
erated rates, supported by favourable
demand conditions, a monthly survey
said on Wednesday.
The seasonally adjusted IHS Markit
India Manufacturing Purchasing
Managers’ Index (PMI) was at 54.9 in
February, up from 54.0 in January,
signalling a stronger improvement in
the sector’s health.
The February PMI data pointed to
an improvement in overall operating
conditions for the eighth straight
month. In PMI parlance, a print above
50 means expansion, while a score
below 50 denotes contraction.
Sustained sales growth supported
the upturn in manufacturing sector
output in February.
“Latest PMI data for India’s manu-
facturing sector revealed an improve-
ment in operating conditions in Feb-
ruary. Output and new orders
expanded at stronger rates, while buy-
ing activity continued,” said Shreeya
Patel, an economist at IHS Markit. PTI

Nearly 150 IAF aircraft
to participate in
Exercise Vayu Shakti
NEW DELHI: A total of 148 aircraft of the
Indian Air Force (IAF) will demon-
strate their capabilities at Exercise
Vayu Shakti that will take place at
Pokharan range in Jaisalmer on
March 7, a senior official said on Tues-
day.
Rafale aircraft will participate at
this exercise for the first time and
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be
the chief guest, the IAF official noted.
The Indian Air Force (IAF) con-
ducts Exercise Vayu Shakti at
Pokharan range every three years to
demonstrate its readiness to conduct
full spectrum operations. The last one
took place in 2019. Out of 148 aircraft
participating in the exercise this year,
109 will be fighter jets, the IAF official
noted. Jaguar fighter jet, Sukhoi-30
fighter jet, MiG-29 fighter jet, Tejas
fighter aircraft and various others will
show their capabilities at Exercise
Vayu Shakti 2022, the official men-
tioned. Capabilities of Aakash missile
system and Spyder missile system will
also be shown at the exercise, the offi-

NDMC bans polybags
thinner than 75 microns
NEW DELHI: The New Delhi Municipal Council
on Wednesday imposed a complete ban on the
use of polythene carry bags thinner than 75
microns in its area with a provision of a fine of
₹5,000 on its breach. The NDMC also plans to
ban the use of virgin or recycled carry bags
and other plastic commodities including poly-
styrene materials thinner than 100 microns
from July 1 this year and those thinner than
120 microns from December 31 this year, an
official said. Besides the use, the ban would
also apply to the manufacturing, stocking, sale
and distribution of these non-degradable pol-
luting materials, the official said. The civic
body has also decided to prohibit plastic com-
modities including polystyrene expanded
polystyrene shall be prohibited from July 1. PTI

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Forest Department
plans to conduct soil testing and an internal
audit in a bid to make the plantation exercise
this year “more scientific”, according to offi-
cials. Like last year, the plantation exercise
will focus on native varieties. This will help
further improve the survival rate of saplings,
a forest department official said. “Testing is
being conducted in all the forest divisions in
Delhi to ascertain the characteristics of the
soil in a particular area. It will give us an idea
whether the soil is alkaline or acidic, has
enough nutrients and moisture and organic
content to support the growth of saplings,” the
official said. “For example, if the soil is alka-
line, it will have to be treated to support sap-
ling growth,” he said. PTI

protests outside campus
NEW DELHI: The Delhi University’s School of
Open Learning (SOL) has prohibited protests
outside its campus building as regular dem-
onstrations are leading to disturbance in aca-
demic activities, according to officials. No offi-
cial notification or order has been issued in
this regard by the SOL administration. Offici-
ating Principal Uma Shankar Pandey told PTI
that he has just “reminded” the police about
an order issued by the Delhi HC in 2006, as for
the last few days, people have been holding
protests and disturbing students. “No official
notification has been issued in this regard. I
have just written to police reminding them
about the order issued by the high court. The
protestors are causing disturbance in aca-
demic activities,” Pandey clarified. PTI

streets of New Orleans to participate in the first
full-dress Mardi Gras held since the pandemic.

BUCHAREST: India’s national flag
came to the rescue of not only the
stranded Indians but also those hail-
ing from Pakistan and Turkey to
cross into the neighbouring coun-
tries of Ukraine on Tuesday.
The Indian students who arrived
in Bucharest from Ukraine said that
the Tricolour helped them as well as
some Pakistani and Turkish students
in safely crossing the various check-
points in the war-torn country.
The Indian students arrived in the
Romanian city to catch the evacua-
tion flights being operated under
Operation Ganga from the neigh-
bouring countries of Ukraine. Air
India, SpiceJet and Indigo are flying
special evacuation flights.
“We were told in Ukraine that
being Indians and carrying Indian
flag, we won’t have any problems,”
said a medical student who
arrived from Odessa in Southern
Ukraine.
The students narrated how they
bought spray paints from the mar-
kets to prepare the Tricolour. “I ran
to the market, bought some colour
sprays and a curtain. I then cut the
curtain and spray-painted it to
make the Indian tricolour,” said a
student.
They added that even some Paki-
stani and Turkish students passed
checkpoints using the Indian flag.
“The Turkish and Pakistani stu-
dents were also using the Indian
flag,” a student said, adding that the
Indian flag was of great help to the
Pakistani, Turkish students.
The students from Odessa moved
from Molodova to Romania.
The students said that they did
not face much problem in Molodova
as the Indian embassy had already
made the arrangements.
The students also expressed their
gratitude to the Indian embassy offi-
cials who arranged for food and
shelter as they awaited their flights
back to India.

WASHINGTON: A group of researchers
is proposing that Tyrannosaurus, the
most famous of all dinosaurs and the
ultimate apex predator, actually
includes three species and not just the
single T.rex, based on thighbone and
tooth variations among dozens of its
fossils. T.rex, meaning “tyrant lizard
king,” has been the sole species of the
genus Tyrannosaurus recognised
since the dinosaur was first described
in 1905. A genus is a broader grouping
of related organisms than a species.
A team of three researchers led by
paleontologist Gregory Paul on Mon-
day said variations they spotted in an
examination of about three dozen
Tyrannosaurus fossils warranted the
recognition of two additional species:
T. imperator, meaning “tyrant lizard
emperor,” and T. regina, meaning
“tyrant lizard queen.”

mens being placed into one species

saurus is beyond the norms for dino-

Some paleontologists not part of the
study disagreed with its conclusions.
“Ultimately, to me, this variation is
very minor and not indicative of
meaningful biological separation of
distinct species that can be defined
based on clear, explicit, consistent dif-
ferences,” University of Edinburgh
paleontologist Steve Brusatte said.
“It’s hard to define a species, even
for animals today, and these fossils
have no genetic evidence that can test
whether there were truly separate
populations. Until I see much stronger
evidence, these are all still T. rex to
me, and that’s what I’ll be calling
them,” Brusatte added.
Paul did not rule out that differen-
ces among individuals or differences
between Tyrannosaurus males and
females were at play, but called this
unlikely. Tyrannosaurus had a mas-
sive head and tremendous bite
strength, walked on two strong legs,

gers. Perhaps the largest-known
Tyrannosaurus is a specimen named
Sue at the Field Museum in Chicago, at
40-1/2 feet long and an estimated 9 ton-
nes. The new study concluded that Sue
is not a T.rex but rather a T. imperator.
The scale of the differences among
the three proposed Tyrannosaurus spe-
cies, Paul said, is akin to the differences
between a lion –– scientific name Pan-
thera leo –– and a tiger, scientific name
Panthera tigris. Lions and tigers are
members of the same genus, Panthera,
but have enough differences that they
are recognized as separate species.
Paleontologist Thomas Carr of Car-
thage College, whose 2020 study of
variation in T.rex found no evidence
of multiple species, also differed with
the new study. “Perhaps most damn-
ing is the fact that the authors were
unable to refer several excellent skulls
to any of the three species,” Carr said.

“More and more people these days
are eating darker chocolates with less
sugar and more cacaos because they
are trying to cut down on sugar intake
or they want to take advantage of per-
ceived health benefits,” Helene Hopfer
said. “Dark chocolate is particularly
high in flavonoids, particularly a sub-
type called flavan-3 and their oligom-
ers, which are all considered func-
tional ingredients due to their associ-
ated health effects,” she added.
However, unsweetened chocolate is
too bitter for most people to enjoy, so
researchers experimented with roast-
ing treatments to modify the flavour
–– investigating more than basic tastes
such as sour and bitter –– making it
more acceptable for consumers, Hop-
fer explained.
For the study, research team mem-
ber Alan McClure, founder of craft
chocolate company Patric Chocolate
and related consultancy Patric Food &
Beverage Development, partnered
with Hopfer and Penn State to charac-
terize the flavour and acceptability of
the chocolates. Part of his doctoral
degree dissertation research, McClure
chose cocoa beans from three origins
–– Madagascar, Ghana and Peru, har-
vested in 2018 and 2019. He roasted
and ground all samples into cocoa
liquor at his factory in Columbia, Mis-
souri, and then shipped the solidified
100% chocolate to Penn State, where
he and Hopfer remelted and por-
tioned out the chocolates into small
discs for sensory evaluation.
McClure found the reaction of study
participants to his 27 100% chocolate
preparations especially interesting,
and he suggested that what he learned
from this research will guide him, and
roasting staff at other chocolate man-
ufacturing companies, in creating
future products through an increased
scientific understanding of the com-
plex changes resulting from cocoa
roasting.
In findings published in Current
Research in Food Science, the
researchers reported that more
intense roasting conditions -- such as
20 minutes at 171° Celsius, 80 min at
135° Celsius, and 54 min at 151° Celsius
-- all led to chocolate consumers find-
ing unsweetened chocolate the most
acceptable. Conversely, research par-
ticipants did not find 100% chocolate
acceptable when made from raw or
lightly roasted cacao, such as beans
roasted 11 minutes at 105° Celsius, or
55 minutes at 63° Celsius.

sion of their country, with some even
returning home to take up arms.
Even before Russia invaded, former
world heavyweight boxing champion
Vitali Klitschko, the current mayor of
Kyiv, told AFP he was “ready to take
up arms”.
“I go to a shooting range. I can fire
almost any weapon,” said the giant of
a man, who played a leading role in
the 2014 Maidan protests.
The 50-year-old’s brother Wlad-
imir, also a former world heavy-
weight champion, has also volun-
teered to fight.
Reigning world heavyweight cham-
pion Oleksandr Usyk’s thoughts at the
beginning of the year were of defend-
ing his title in a rematch with Britain’s

back in Ukraine to defend his family.
Usyk, who returned to the country
as soon as the invasion began, said he
