Pragmatism through Education and Innovation.

I. Introduction

Ethics is a standard moral value that has been followed and inspired by most educators in

education. It provides us with well-defined standards of right and wrong that prescribe the

human character and conduct in terms of our obligations, rights, rules, benefits to society, and

fairness. However, many educators have used many ethical theories in today's society, depending

on their purpose, obligation, and life goals. Whether it is for the betterment of society and the

improvement of the country or the benefit of the student, that theory serves a purpose.

Educational standards, educational methods, educational programs, and even how education is

organized and managed are all affected by this theory. However, because we now live in a

modern society, many educators wish to innovate their education to modernize and meet the

demands of internationalization.

With these advancements and modernity, Pragmatism is one of the most well-known Ethical

Theories globally, with modern and advanced education. Apart from that, Pragmatism

emphasizes personal experience in developing experience and democracy in education and

making education a social activity linked to life's benefits. These theories are compatible with

modernization. Learners must adapt to their ever-changing living environment by going through

the learning process. Simultaneously, Pragmatism's educational principles emphasize practice,

which traditional education lacks. Formal education focuses on the teacher's knowledge

transmission rather than the learners' dynamism and positivity. According to Pragmatism,

changing educational content is necessary to have the knowledge and skills to live and work

actively, adapt to change, and improvise in new situations. In response to this Ethical Theory and

Modernization. Specifically, this paper intends to address the following:

1. To know the principles and concept of Pragmatism

2. To ascertain its impact on students

3. To determine whether it genuinely contributes to students' preparedness for Innovation,

which is necessary for them to thrive in today's globally competitive world.

II. Presentation

A. Concept of Pragmatism

According to (Drew 2019), The Greek words "practice" and "action" are the origins of the term

pragmatism. Specifically, the primary focus of Pragmatism in Education is the following,

 Pragmatism is defined as the practice of doing practical things that produce results.

 In education, Pragmatism entails imparting practical lessons relevant to students' lives.

 John Dewey and Charles S. Pierce are two critical pragmatist theorists.

 Project-based learning, play-based learning, experimentation, and experiential learning

are part of a pragmatic classroom.

 The polar opposite of pragmatic education is what we refer to as "idealist education."

Idealist educators instill abstract concepts that are not applicable in the real world. You

might be a pragmatist if you only want to learn relevant things about your life.

B. The Principles of Pragmatism

Drew, also cited to the website Helpful Professor.com, that According to Sharma, Devi, and

Kumari (2018), there are four pragmatism principles that teachers should be aware of:

1. Principle of Utility

Everything a student learns should be helpful in some way. Everything should be beneficial

to the student in some way. A student is uninterested in learning abstract theoretical concepts

that will never be applied in their lives outside of the classroom. On the other hand, A student
desires to learn about topics relevant to their daily lives. Students will be more engaged and

eager to learn appropriate and valuable information.

2. Principle of Interest

The interests of the students should be included in the curriculum. Students have four interests,

according to Dewey (a critical pragmatist theorist): conversation, investigation, construction, and

creative expression. As a result, teachers should concentrate on designing lessons that encourage

students to interact with one another, investigate things through experimentation, create

something, and be creative.

3. The Principle of Experience

Pragmatists place a premium on experience over everything else. Students can learn abstract

concepts all day long, but they will never truly understand them unless they have firsthand

experience with them. As a result, teachers should plan many project-based, experimental, and

experiential lessons to help students 'learn by doing.'

4. Principle of Integration

The content of the curriculum is not separated. Mathematics, science, and the arts are not three

separate subjects. Instead, the pragmatic teacher uses a process known as 'integration' to connect

the curriculum content. The teacher will demonstrate how concepts from various issues are

related to one another and encourage students to gain a comprehensive understanding of the

topics they are studying.

C. Utilization of Pragmatism in Teaching and its Impact on Students.

According to the study by (Pham 2020), it has entitled The Concept of Pragmatism and Its

Impact on Education in The Vietnamese Context. It proves that the educational goals, contents,

and methods of Pragmatism are appropriate for Vietnamese education in terms of contributing to
building a new social consciousness to the student based on Marxism-Leninism and Ho Chi

Minh's thought, as well as preserving and promoting the nation's valuable traditions, will repel

all false ideas and lifestyles that are contrary to the values of truth, goodness, and beauty. This

has contributed to today's understanding of Pragmatism in education. People are encouraged to

live an active and positive life with flexible and flexible behavior to adapt to the situation and

improve the circumstances that benefit them, thanks to Pragmatism's value to Vietnamese

education. Pragmatism, in this light, is compatible with Marxism-Leninism and Ho Chi Minh's

philosophy of comprehensive education. With that in mind, a focused teaching method in the

practical utility of Pragmatism is used as the center of a child's attention, according to a study by

(Gissa 2015) titled Pragmatism in Education. A suitable method, according to him, is based on

activities. The pragmatic method emphasizes learning through the child's own experiences.

According to a pragmatist, education is about preparing for the real world. According to the

pragmatist, "education is not so much teaching the child things he should know as encouraging

him to learn for himself through experimental and creative activity." People who learn by doing

become more creative, confident, and cooperative due to their experiences. The pragmatic

approach is socialist. His education should be targeted toward a specific objective. He needs to

figure out what he wants to do with his life.

This teaching method eventually leads to and corresponds to Pragmatism as a Philosophy of

Education, which influences both philosophical developments, particularly those concerning

ethics and epistemology, and educational concerns (Klockner, Shields, Pillay, & Ames, 2021).

This Pragmatism in Education focuses on individual and societal experiences to set academic

goals for individuals, but they must be appropriate for the purposes and circumstances of the
organization festival (Krajnovi, Vrdoljak Ragu, & Perkovi, 2021; Ziakas, Antchak, & Getz,

2021).

D. Pragmatism Towards Innovation.

As a result, the educational method has demonstrated clear Innovation, radicality, and radicality.

Educational thinkers who are pragmatic are all interested in education and are also well-known

educators. Each thinker has their educational method, but they all share Pragmatism's

characteristics. Consider the practical effects of the objects of your conception, said Charles

Sanders Peirce (Peirce, 2012).

According to the study of (Pham 2020), Pragmatism has created a dynamic movement that

upholds the role of self-reliance and human life, recognizing the practical value. As a result, it is

considered a theory and tool used in modern life. Pragmatism responds to the desire for creative

freedom and places a high value on artistic accomplishments and personalities. That is also one

of the reasons why practical ideas encourage agility, flexibility, sensitivity, and adaptability to

reality in all situations and conditions of life, as well as an appreciation for the efficiency and

utility of the actions, activities, and works being performed. Individualism, self-interest, and self-

interest are three fundamental ethical principles of Pragmatism. Pragmatists must comprehend

that Pragmatism promotes efficiency, performance goals, and the value created by individuals or

communities.

This Innovation brought by Pragmatism has been examined by (Pham 2020) through accessing

its effects on the Vietnamese students and education system. He founds out that the role of

Pragmatism in education demonstrates that educational and training development must be linked

to the needs of socioeconomic development and defense of the Fatherland and scientific and
technological progress and adherence to international laws. With the application of Pragmatism,

the education system is slowly shifting the focus of education and training development from

quantity to quality and efficiency while still meeting the quantity requirements. Providing

Openness, flexibility, and connection between education levels and levels, education and training

modes, standardization, and modernization of education and training are all areas that need

improvement. Aside from that, children learn a lot about introductory Chemistry, Physics, and

Biology at the practical Pedagogical School that he and his wife run by examining natural

processes that occur while cooking breakfast – activities that students do in the classroom. The

pragmatic philosophy underpins this practical element of "learning by doing.".

III. Conclusion

Based on the related studies and literature that have been gathered. It has been proven that

Pragmatism brings positive reviews to education and Innovation for it:

First, it includes and imparts practical lessons relevant to students' lives, allowing them

to be more adaptable and innovative in today's globally competitive world. The

educational method has demonstrated clear Innovation, radicality, and radicality due to

utilizing Pragmatism in education. Openness, flexibility, and connection between

education levels and levels, education and training modes, standardization, and

modernization of education and training are all areas that need improvement. At the

practical Pedagogical School, which underpins this practical element of "learning by

doing," students are taught about introductory Chemistry, Physics, and Biology.

Second, Pragmatism instilled in students a sense of nationality. Which has been proven

by the study of (Pham 2020), titled The Concept of Pragmatism and Its Impact on
Education in the Vietnamese Context, which shows that the educational goals, contents,

and methods of Pragmatism are appropriate for Vietnamese education in terms of

contributing and building a new social consciousness in students, as well as preserving

and promoting the nation's valuable traditions, will repel all false ideas and lifestyles that

are contrary to the nation's valuable practices, will repel all false ideas and lifestyles that

Overall, the use of Pragmatism in education benefits students' individual and societal

experiences, allowing them to set personal goals and gain knowledge about the real-life

practice of doing practical things, making them aware of their surroundings and

equipping them to be adaptive in today's globally competitive world.
