COMMUNITY ANALYSIS
Community analysis involves identifying health issues within a community, gathering data
about the community, the target group, and the health concern, analysing data, and assessing
community needs. Community analysis and needs assessment are the first steps in health
planning. The main components are collecting, analysing, and interpreting data, identifying
community assets etc.

1. PROFILE OF THE COMMUNITY

A. Geographical location

Kothad is an island near Kochi surrounded by river Periyar. It is a part of Kadamakkudy grama
panchyath, Kanayannur Taluk, Ernakulam District in the Indian state of Kerala. Kothad is one
among the group of islands, that form a part of Kadamakkudy Panchayat. Kothad comprises
Kandanad and Korampadom has a population of over 1,500. Kothad is connected by the
Kothad-Chitoor bridge and The International Container Transhipment Terminal road which
assure the islanders an easy transportation. Private Buses frequently operates from kothad to
Kochi city and Aluva. A boat service operating between Ernakulam-Varapuzha also serves
Kothad island.

Kothad is an island

70% of the kothad island consists of paddy fields; the economy of Kothad was principally
consists of inland fishing by traditional methods and cultivation of rice.

Family -nuclear, extended, majority of the families only have elderly people

Religion – majority is Latin Catholics and some Hindus

Occupation- farming, small scale industries

Education- there is only one primary school. Most of them have primary literacy

Health- very poor. There is a small primary health care centre.

B. Economic

Money -income is very poor. Many of them depends on government pension.

Land – it is like a village colony.

Investment and savings - no investments and savings

 C. Political

There is a police station. Kothad is under Kothad grama panchayath. LDF is the leading party.

D. Cultural

There is a strong unity between the people. They don’t have strong religious separation. Since
it is an island the culture of this place is not much influenced by other culture. Cinema and art
have not much influence on them.
