NUCLEAR
KACY FIELD ENERGY
INTRODUCTION

Focus Statement: Learning objectives

Nuclear energy is the future • What is nuclear energy

• How does it work?

• Nuclear energy in motion
• Advantages in nuclear energy

• Challenges in nuclear energy

WHAT IS NUCLEAR ENERGY

• Is a process to use energy to create electricity

• Used in space exploration

• Also helps with medical imaging and cancer treatments

HOW DOES IT WORK?
• Splits Uranium atoms to heat water into steam to move a turbine, which
turns and armature to create a magnetic field to produce electricity
• Can be set up to produce a cobalt-60, an isotope that is used in medical
imaging and cancer treatments
• Cassini probe used a nuclear generator to travel a billion miles through
space to Saturn
• Mars rover is also powered by a small nuclear generator

ADVANTAGES
OF NUCLEAR

• 0 Emissions
• Fights climate
change
• Produces reliable
electricity
• Boosts Jobs
• Space exploration
• Radioisotopes for
cancer treatment
CHALLENGES OF NUCLEAR ENERGY
• Safety
• Expensive
• Produces radioactive
waste
• Mining uranium isn’t
good for the
environment
• Terrorist
CONCLUSION

What we learned- Any questions?

• Nuclear energy is dangerous when

done wrong, but once safely
constructed it’s the best for the
environment.
