GEC 003: PURPOSIVE COMMUNICATION
Instructor: Eileen Baptista-Dupra, LPT

INTRODUCTION!

Many people are afraid of public speaking. They think that effective public speakers are “naturals” who
were born with strong oratory skills. Luckily, it is practice and not genetics that will make you a better public
speaker. With practice and a few tips, you can improve your skills in a relatively short amount of time. This module
will discuss the different types of speeches and connecting with the audience.
So, let us begin our session with a prayer, In the Name of Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit Amen “God
says, Trust me. I’ve stayed with you through every storm in your life, I’ve given you all that you need, I have, and
always will protect you, your family and love ones. Things might be difficult for you now, just trust in My timing, a
change in your circumstances is coming. Trust Me and enjoy this new day. Amen

MOTIVATION!

How do you feel when you are asked to stand before an audience and deliver a speech?

I felt like my knees are trembling and my hands suddenly got cold.
Do you feel comfortable?

At first, I am not but when I finished it, I felt so comfortable.

How do you describe your feelings?

I cannot truly understand my feelings at that moment because at first, I got so nervous but when I started
speaking I saw them listening to me very well so my it eased nervousness then at the end I feel so relieved
and amazed because I cannot imagine that I finished my speech in a good flow.

LESSON DEVELOPMENT
DIFFERENT TYPES OF SPEECHES According to PURPOSE, DELIVERY AND OCCASION:
I. DIFFERENT TYPES OF SPEECHES ACCORDING TO PURPOSE - The four basic types of speech according to
purpose are: to inform, to instruct, to entertain, and to persuade. These are not mutually exclusive of one another. You may
have several purposes in mind when giving your presentation. However, the principle purpose of a speech will generally fall
into one of four basic types:

1. INFORMATIVE - This speech serves to provide interesting and useful information to your audience. Example: A teacher
telling students about earthquakes  A student talking about her research. Example: A travelogue about the Tower of London
A computer programmer speaking about new software

2. DEMONSTRATIVE- This has many similarities with an informative speech. A demonstrative speech also teaches you
something. The main difference lies in including a demonstration of how to do the thing you’re teaching. Example: How to
start your own blog How to bake a cake How to write a speech How to… just about anything

3. PERSUASIVE - A persuasive speech works to convince people to change in some way: they think, the way they do
something, or to start doing something that they are not currently doing. Example: Become an organ donor Improve your
health through better eating. Example: Television violence is negatively influencing our children Become a volunteer and
change the world

4. ENTERTAINING - The after-dinner speech is a typical example of an entertaining speech. The speaker provides pleasure
and enjoyment that make the audience laugh or identify with anecdotal information. Example: Excuses for any occasion
Explaining cricket to an American Things you wouldn’t know without the movies

II. DIFFERENT TYPES OF SPEECHES ACCORDING TO DELIVERY - The easiest approach to speech delivery is not
always the best. Substantial work goes into the careful preparation of an interesting and ethical message, so it is understandable
that students may have the impulse to avoid “messing it up” by simply reading it word for word.

 IMPROMPTU SPEAKING - It is the presentation of a short message without advance preparation. Impromptu
speeches often occur when someone is asked to “say a few words” or give a toast on a special occasion.
 EXTEMPORANEOUS SPEAKING -Extemporaneous speaking is the presentation of a carefully planned and
rehearsed speech, spoken in a conversational manner using brief notes.
 SPEAKING FROM A MANUSCRIPT-Manuscript speaking is the word-for-word iteration of a written message. In
a manuscript speech, the speaker maintains his or her attention on the printed page except when using visual aids.
 SPEAKING FROM MEMORY -Memorized speaking is the rote recitation of a written message that the speaker has
committed to memory.

Different Types of Speeches according to Occasion
PURPOSIVE COMMUNICATION CEREMONIAL SPEAKING - Ceremonial speeches are given during a ceremony or a
ritual marked by observance of formality or etiquette. These ceremonies tend to be very special for people, so it shouldn’t be
surprising that they are opportunities for speech making.

A. Speeches of Introduction
 Speeches of Introduction The first type of speech is called the speech of introduction, which is a mini speech given by
the host of a ceremony that introduces another speaker and his or her speech.
 Just like any other speech, a speech of introduction should be a complete speech and have a clear introduction, body,
and conclusion—and you should do it all in under two minutes.
 For an introduction, think of a hook that will make your audience interested in the upcoming speaker. A. Speeches of
Introduction
 Speeches of Introduction -The body of your introductory speech should be devoted to telling the audience about the
speaker’s topic, why the speaker is qualified, and why the audience should listen.
 Speeches of Introduction -The final part of a good introduction is the conclusion, which is generally designed to
welcome the speaker to the lectern.

B. Speeches of Presentation - speech of presentation is a brief speech given to accompany a prize or honor.
 Speeches of Presentation- First, you should explain what the award or honor is and why the presentation is important.
 Second, you can explain what the recipient has accomplished in order for the award to be bestowed.
 Speeches of Presentation Did the person win a race? Did the person write an important piece of literature? Did the
person mediate conflict? Whatever the recipient has done, you need to clearly highlight his or her work.
 Speeches of Presentation Lastly, if the race or competition was conducted in a public forum and numerous people
didn’t win, you may want to recognize those people for their efforts as well.

C. Speeches of Dedication
 speech of dedication is delivered when a new store opens, a building is named after someone, a plaque is placed on a
wall, a new library is completed, and so on.
 Speeches of Dedication These speeches are designed to highlight the importance of the project and possibly those
to whom the project has been dedicated.

D. A toast - PURPOSIVE COMMUNICATION CEREMONIAL SPEAKING D. Toasts - A toast is a speech

designed to congratulate, appreciate, or remember.
 First, toasts can be delivered for the purpose of congratulating someone for an honor, a new job, or getting married.
You can also toast someone to show your appreciation for something
 Lastly, we toast people to remember them and what they have accomplished.
 When preparing a toast, the first goal is always to keep your remarks brief. Toasts are generally given during the
middle of some kind of festivities (e.g., wedding, retirement party, farewell party).
 Second, the goal of a toast is to focus attention on the person or persons being toasted—not on the speaker.

E. Roast -PURPOSIVE COMMUNICATION CEREMONIAL SPEAKING E. Roasts The roast speech is a

very interesting and peculiar speech because it is designed to both praise and good-naturedly insult a person
being honored.

 Roasts Generally, roasts are given at the conclusion of a banquet in honor of someone’s life achievements.
G. Eulogies - A eulogy is a speech given in honor of someone who has died.
H. Speeches of Farewell - A speech of farewell allows someone to say good-bye to one part of his or her life
as he or she is moving on to the next part of life.

 F. Speeches of Farewell Maybe you’ve accepted a new job and are leaving your current job, or you’re
graduating from college and entering the work force.

I. Inspiration Speaking - The goal of an inspirational speech is to elicit or arouse an emotional state within
an audience.

Speeches to Ensure Goodwill

 Speeches to Ensure Good will be an intangible asset that is made up of the favor or reputation of an individual or
organization.
 Speeches of goodwill are often given in an attempt to get audience members to view the person or organization
more favorably.
 Speeches of goodwill are clearly persuasive, they try not to be obvious about the persuasive intent and are often
delivered as information-giving speeches that focus on an individual or organization’s positives attributes.
 Speeches to Ensure Goodwill, there are three basic types of speeches of goodwill: public relations, justification, and
apology.

Speeches for Public Relations

 Speeches for Public Relations In a public relations speech, the speaker is speaking to enhance one’s own image or the
image of his or her organization.
 Speeches for Public Relations You can almost think of these speeches as cheerleading speeches because the ultimate
goal is to get people to like the speaker and what he or she represents.
Speeches for Justification
 The Speeches for Justification The second common speech of goodwill is the speech of justification, which is
given when someone attempts to defend why certain actions were taken or will be taken.
 The Speeches for Justification In these speeches, speakers have already enacted (or decided to enact) some kind of
behavior, and are now attempting to justify why the behavior is or was appropriate.

Speeches of Apology
 The Speeches of Apology These speeches have become more and more commonplace. Every time we turn around, a
politician, professional athlete, musician, or actor/actress is doing something reprehensible and getting caught.
 The Speeches of Apology In fact, the speech of apology has quickly become a fodder for humor as well.
Speeches of Commencements
 The second type of inspirational speech is the speech of commencement, which is designed to recognize and celebrate
the achievements of a graduating class or other group of people.
 The Speeches for Commencements. The most typical form of commencement speech happens when
someone graduates from school.

Manners in speech
Manners in speech refer to the ethical standards in delivering a speech in public. Lucas (2011)
specified some of them.
Observe ethically sound goals. Avoid criticiz i n g your teachers, family, friends, and other people or
promoting massdestruction, forinstance, hacking.
Prepare all the time. You have a full responsibility to yourself and to our audience when you are asked
to deliver a speech. So, in order to fulfill it, you have to be prepared.
Tell the truth. Be accurate with your sources and data. Acknowledge the author of your borrowed
ideas including quotes, songs, phrases, and s tatistics, among others. Simply observe, "honesty is the
best policy."
Be sensible and sensitive. Your audience come from different backgrounds, so as much as possible, respect
their identity, affiliation, religion, beliefs, values, preferences, and orientation through your language and
gestures.

Farewell Speech:

When I started working here, it feels like home because I am so comfortable with you all. I never
imagined that this day would come. I really love you so much because without you all, I did not enjoy my
work in here. It is so hard to say goodbye, but I think I need to do so. I guess this will be my chance to
welcome my next journey in life.

Working here is one of my most unforgettable moment in my whole. I met a lot of people that truly cares
for me. They are also the one who always help me whenever I have a problem. I am so proud that this
company help me to grow and contribute more. This helps me to go out the best in me and enhanced my
hardworking nature in work. It help me to work on my weaknesses with other employees around me.

So, I think this will be the last day with you all. We need to keep in mind that there is no permanent thing
in this world. We will all come to the point that we need to say goodbye in order for us to explore the beauty
of life. God has a purpose why it happened and just have to trust him. Just always remember that, every
ending has a new beginning.

Eulogy Speech:

“Life does not come with a manual; it comes with a mother,” as the quotation stated. We cannot have a
meaningful life when there is no mother who will care for us. We are not here today if there is no mother who
gave birth to us. My mother is one of the best women I really admired the most. She is the strongest and bold
woman I ever knew. Yet, we need to accept the fact that her life is limited, and she will not always be with us
forever.

Losing a mother is a pain that cannot be described in words. It is impossible to move on from the memory
of losing the woman who sacrificed happiness in her own life so that you could have a better one. My mother
is my everything. She will always be the number one person I need in my life no matter how grown I am. I
thank her for being there with me whenever I needed her and being sorry for all that unpleasant attitude, I
acted towards her when she was still alive.

So, everyone, cherish and enjoy being with your mother. Be nice to her because when she will be gone,
we cannot do anything anymore. It will be the most regretful moment in your life if she passes away and not
being good to her. All you can do is to prove to her that all the things she does will be worth it. Learn to
appreciate your mother before it is too late.

Toast Speech:

Every accomplishment gives a truly happiness, isn’t it? This is the most wonderful feeling in this
world. It feels like you are in heaven because everyone is looking up on you. So now, I am proud to present to
you Ms. Kathryn Bernardo for winning the best actress award in the 2020 FAMAS Award. It is an
overwhelming achievement that everyone truly appreciates.

Kathryn Bernardo is one of the most popular artists in town because of her acting skills. She is also
known with everyone because of their famous loveteam “Kathniel.” She is the first and only Filipina
actress who breached the ₱800-Million mark for two movies. One was in 2018 for The Hows of Us and
the other one is Hello, Love, Goodbye for 2019. She is truly an inspiration and has a good influence in
town.

So, listen everyone, it is not bad to try whatever you want. The important thing in this world are the
things that will truly make us happy. It is the accomplishment I am talking about, the one that will make
us achieve the happiness in life. We should not give up on things because I believe all our hardships will
be worth it someday. At the end, accomplishment will give us smile on our faces not only you, but also
the people around you.

PhilHealth Corruption

Where did the Php15,000,000,000 go? This is the most frequent question of people you can hear
nowadays. The stolen money we should not forget and must focus on. The government keeps distracting us by
releasing a new issue every week to hide their incompetency in handling our situation. They are diverting our
attention away from the missing 15 billion of PhilHealth.

Exposing the PhilHealth corruption is what we should do right now. If we will not make an action,
then what will going to happen. Let us be aware about the things around us especially in this kind of issue.
Open your eyes and speak because it is the least move, we can do for our country. We all have the authority to
fight for this corruption issue.

Php15,000,000,000 is not a joke. All people are providing for it just to make sure that they have
something reliable when they get sick. The money we are reserving for it will become wasted, if we will just let
pass of this corruption. You have the right to voice out your complaints about this issue. It is not only us can
benefit from it but also you especially if you are employed and there is always a deduction from your salary for
your PhilHealth.

So, wake up people, this is not the time to be silent right now. We are experiencing a corruption not
only a million but a billion pesos. Stop being a hocus-focus, there are so many Filipinos who have sick that
depends on the money that PhilHealth will provide. Repent and make reparation, restoring to Filipinos their
right to universal health care, and to life. Amid all the controversies enveloping PhilHealth, we hope that truth,
justice, and the common good will ultimately prevail.

My Reason for Choosing my Topic:

I chose the PhilHealth Corruption because it is the most interesting for me. I also have complaint about
it because of what happened to my mother at the hospital. They only deducted a cheap amount; it does not even
reach the half of our hospital bill. Then the issue came out at that time, that there is a Php 15B was stolen. I also
want to speak about it because I want to persuade people to also make an action about it.

LESSON ON: Non-Verbal Communication

Non- Verbal communication is a behavior that conveys and represents meanings. All kinds of human
responses that are not expressed in words. Examples are your stares, smiles, tone, movements, manners of walking,
standing and sitting, appearance towards punctuality, space and personality.
Aspects of Non-Verbal Communication
1. Body language - Body language refers to your body movements which include eye contact, facial
expressions, posture, and gesture.
 Using Eye Contact – your listeners can easily detect how confident you are or how interested you are to
talk to them if you use eye contact effectively.
 Using Facial Expressions – tools to express or communicate your emotions through your eyes, lips etc.
 Using Gestures- include movements of your hands, legs, and other body parts that carry meanings.
 Using Good Postures – the position of your body either when you stand or when you sit. It is important to
have a good posture because it shows confidence and elicits positive impression from your audience.
2. Clothing and appearance are considered as vital in creating first impressions of your speaker. The way you
look and what you wear matter as these contribute significantly to the success of your speech.
3. Vocal elements include volume, rate, tone and pitch. The loudest and softness of your voice; rate is the speed
of delivery, tonne is the voice quality and pitch is highness or lowness of your voice.

how comfortable you are at a distance from the people you are talking to. Space and distance can be classified into
four: intimate, personal, social and public.
5. Colors- reflect people’s personality and reveal character. Hence your choice of colors for your clothes and visual
aids matter to you audience.
ACTIVITY TIME!

II. Write a paragraph on the importance of non-verbal communication.

Non-verbal Communication is one of our common way to communicate with each other. It always takes a

place in our everyday life. Whenever we are so lazy to talk, this is our way to communicate with others by

using our hands, head, feet, and other parts of the human body. It is like the sign language employed by the

mute to communicate their thoughts and feelings to people they deal with. It is a substitute way when we

do not want to open or mouth to speak, it may take the form of conventional gestures such as the nodding

of the head to show the approval or agreement and the shaking of head to signify rejection or disagreement.
