EXAMPLE 3

A circle whose center lies at (12, 14) passes through point (4, 8). Find
the length of the radius of the circle.
SOLUTION:
The length of the radius of the circle is equal to the distance from its
center to any point on the circle. Hence, to find the length of the radius of the
given circle, we must determine the distance from its center (12, 14) to (4, 8) as
one of its point.
If we let 𝑥1 = 4, 𝑦1 = 8, 𝑥2 = 12, and 𝑦2 = 14, then by substitution in
the distance formula, we have
𝑑= (𝑥2 − 𝑥1 )2 + (𝑦2 − 𝑦1 )2
= (12 − 4)2 + (14 − 8)2
= 82 + 62
= 64 + 36
= 100
= 10 Quarter 2 Week 7 - A
Therefore, the length of the radius of the circle is 10 units. (M10GE-IIg-2)

GENERALIZATIONS EXAMPLE 2
The distance between two points is always nonnegative. Find the distance between points (2, 4) and (−18, 9).
The horizontal distance between two points on the coordinate plane is
the absolute value of the difference of their x-coordinates. Likewise, the vertical SOLUTION:

Let 𝑥1 = 2, 𝑦1 = 4, 𝑥2 = −18, and 𝑦2 = 9.
their y-coordinates.
By substitution in the distance formula, we have
In general, the distance between two points 𝑥1 , 𝑦1 and 𝑥2 , 𝑦2 is
determined by the distance formula derived from the Pythagorean Theorem 𝑑= (𝑥2 − 𝑥1 )2 + (𝑦2 − 𝑦1 )2
which is 𝑑 = (𝑥2 − 𝑥1 )2 + (𝑦2 − 𝑦1 )2 . = (−18 − 2)2 + (9 − 4)2
= (−20)2 +52
= 400 + 25
= 425

425 is not a perfect square but we can factor it such that one
of the factors is a perfect square.
Hence, simplifying, we have
𝑑 = 425 = 25(17) = 5 17
Thus, the distance between (2, 4) and (−18, 9) is 𝟓 𝟏𝟕
units.

points (0, 0) and (6, 8) as shown on the
graph at the right? 1. (2, −3) and (10, −3)

SOLUTION: 2. (3, −7) and (3, 8)

If we let (0, 0) be the point 𝑥1 , 𝑦1 and (6, 8) be 𝑥2 , 𝑦2 then 𝑥1 = 0,
𝑦1 = 0, 𝑥2 = 6, and 𝑦2 = 8. By substitution in the distance formula, we have 3. (−4, 3) and (7, 6)
𝑑= (𝑥2 − 𝑥1 )2 + (𝑦2 − 𝑦1 )2
4. (2, 3) and (14, 8)
= (6 − 0)2 + (8 − 0)2
= 62 + 82 5. (−3, 9) and (2, 5)
= 36 + 64
= 100
= 10

Thus, the distance between points (0, 0) and (6, 8) is 10 units.

To prove that ∆𝐴𝐵𝐶 is an isosceles triangle, we must show

Using distance formula in finding the distances, we have:
that at least two of its sides are congruent.
From the center (−2,3) to point (4, 5)

Using distance formula in finding 𝑑= [4 − −2 ]2 + (5 − 3)2 = 62 + 22 = 36 + 4 = 40 = 4(10) = 2 10

the lengths of the sides of ∆𝐴𝐵𝐶, we have This is equal to the length of the radius of circle O.
𝐴𝐵 = [1 − −1 ]2 + [4 − −1 ]2 From the center (−2,3) to point 0, −3
= 22 + 52 = 4 + 25
= 29 𝑑= [0 − −2 ]2 + (−3 − 3)2 = 22 + (−6)2 = 4 + 36 = 40 = 2 10
The two distances are equal implies that points (4, 5) and 0, −3 are
𝐵𝐶 = (3 − 1)2 + (−1 − 4)2
equidistant from the center of the circle.
= 22 + (−5)2 = 4 + 25
= 29 Therefore, point (𝟎, −𝟑) is on circle O since its distance from the
center of the circle is equal to the radius of circle.
AB = BC implies that 𝐴𝐵 ≅ 𝐵𝐶.
