oxidized.
(c) The d1 configuration is very unstable in ions.
(iv) What are the characteristic of the transition elements and why are they called transition elements?

Q.4 Read the following and answer the questions from (i) to (iv) given below
General electronic configuration of transition metals is (n-1)d1-10 n1s-2, where n the outermost shell
which may have one or two electrons, whereas (n-1) stands for the inner d-orbital which may have one to
ten electrons. Transition elements display typically metallic property such as high tensile strength, ductility,
malleability and lusture. With the exceptions of Zn, Cd, Hg and Mn, they have one or more typical metallic
structures at normal temperature. Transition metals shows a great variety of oxidation states in its
compounds, except few elements. The elements which given the greatest number of oxidation state occur in
or near the middle of the series. Stability of higher oxidation states increases in a group from top to bottom
due to increase in the distance from the outermost shell.
(a) Why are Mn2+ compounds more stable than Fe2+ towards oxidation to their +2 state?
(b) Why is the highest oxidation state of a metal exhibited in its oxide or fluoride only?
(c) Explain why Cu+ ion is not stable in aqueous solution.
(d) Which metals in the first series of transition metals exhibit + 1 oxidation state most frequently
and why?
OR
Explain why Mn3+ is a good oxidizing agent?
