Guidance notes of developing a learning plan with achievable outcomes

Essential components of the learning plan:
1. What are your career aspirations? Consider what type of job you wish to be employed in upon
graduation or which profession do you want to enter?
What are the typical characteristics displayed by people in these professions/fields of work?
How do your strengths and weakness align with the KSA’s you identified in the career planning?
2. Potential action plan that could be done while studying abroad to facilitate you to achieve your
specific learning and development goals (that you couldn’t achieve simply by studying in Hong
Kong)?
3. Incorporate the research on your target institution and host country to your discussion.

The objectives should follow the SMART principles: specific, measureable, attainable, relevant and time-
bound.
х “I want to set up my own company in future.” – This could be relevant to a business student;
however, it cannot fulfil other principles: specific, measureable, attainable, time-bound.
х “I want to learn about entrepreneurship [SPECIFIC AREA] at the host country through joining three
to four company visits during the exchange study period [MEASUREABLE, ATTAINABLE,
RELEVANT, TIME-BOUND].”
х “I want to work in the advertising company upon graduation. I will observe the advertisement in the
host country to learn from their creative ideas.” – The bar is set too low despite the fact that this is
relevant and attainable.
 “If visa condition allowed, I would look for placement at a local retail company or volunteer at social
enterprise with work related to programme promotion and marketing during the study abroad period
[SPECIFIC, MEASUREABLE, ATTAINABLE (CONDITIONAL), RELEVANT, TIME-
BOUND].”

You can develop your career before graduation by taking action today. Think out of the box and reach out
to the prospective university departments, organizations or companies to discover more opportunities before
the exchange programme commenced.
What are your career aspirations? (It can be short-term career goals that you would like to achieve in 1-2
years’ time, or it can be a medium-term career goals that you would like to achieve in 3-5 years’ time).

What are the typical characteristics displayed by people in these professions/fields of work? Discuss
this in terms of these workers’ knowledge, skills and attitudes (KSA). (You may do a quick search on
job posting websites to identify the job requirements).
What are your major strengths? What are your major areas needing development? How do these
strengths and weakness align with the KSA’s you identified in the career planning?

List three key objectives of to be achieved through the Exchange Programme (The objectives should be
unique to the host country and host institution that could not be achieved in Hong Kong. Objectives should
follow the SMART principles).
1. My action plans to achieve my key objectives while studying abroad to facilitate you to
achieve your specific learning and development goals (that you couldn’t achieve simply by
studying in Hong Kong).
