Predating the Christian tradition is
that of Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights
commemorating the recovery of Jerusalem
and rededication of the Second Temple, after
Judah “The Hammer” Maccabee removed
all the statues of Greek gods (take that,
Saturn… er… Cronus!) and goddesses. Gifting
around Hannukah typically involves books
and games. Of course, there’s also Kwanzaa,
first celebrated in 1966 but having its roots
in African harvest festivals. The last day of
the seven day festival is Imani, which honors
the creative spirit and reaffirms self worth.
Therefore, in the spirit of Imani, it would be
best to present something thoughtful and
handmade. But, if you’re a regular reader of
the Dabbling Duck, I reckon you’re neither
thoughtful nor handy.
All that is to say: Get them a vacuum

the encouragement to keep a cleaner house.
