SIMPLE HARMONIC MOTION WORKSHEET

Answer ALL questions in this document.

1. A particle is oscillating in SHM with a period of 4.5ms and amplitude 3.0cm. At time t =
0, the particle is at the equilibrium position. Calculate, for this particle:
(a) The frequency

(b) The angular frequency

(c) The maximum speed

(d) The maximum acceleration

(e) The speed at time, t = 1.0 ms.

2. A spring stretches by 85mm when a mass of 50g is hung from it. The spring is then
stretched a further distance of 15mm from the equilibrium position and the mass is
released at time t = 9. Calculate:
(a) The spring constant

(b) The amplitude of the oscillations

(c) The period

(d) The displacement at time t = 0.20s (g = 9.81 m/s2)

3. A mass of 0.50kg vibrates in SHM with a maximum kinetic energy of 3.0mJ. If its
amplitude is 20mm, calculate the frequency of the motion.

4. A mass oscillates in SHM on the end of a spring of force constant 40N/m. If the
amplitude of the motion is 30mm, calculate the maximum kinetic energy of the mass.
[Hint: ω2 =k/m]

5. A body of mass 0.10kg oscillates in SHM with an amplitude of 5.0cm and with a
frequency of 0.50Hz. Calculate:
(a) Maximum value for kinetic energy. State where this occur.

(b) Minimum value for its kinetic energy and state where this occur
