PREFACE
In the vast catalogue of 19th century teaching |
literature for the guitar, the Twenty—five Etudes
Opus 60 by Matteo Carcassi (Florence 1792 ~ Paris
1853) deserve a place of primary importance. For
they combine, in the best classical tradition, fertile
creativity with the development of suitable technical
formulae. This is without @ doubt Carcassi’s most
representative work; for indeed this composer, in
his more ambitious concert pieces, never quite
managed to go beyond the limits of repetitious, if
competent, craftsmanship. Opus 60, on the contrary.
is imbued with true musical freshness and, along with
études by Giuliani, Carulli, Sor, Aguado und Coste,
provides an essential basis for the study of the yuitar.
Our edition is based on the following source,
probably published during the first half of the 19th
century: i
25 | Etudes Mélodiques / PROGRESSIVES / Com.
posées pour la { GUITARE | PAR | MATTEO CAR- |
CASI | Op: 60 Pr: 10! | A. Fillée. | PARIS,
BRANDUS et C® / 103, Rue Richelieu, of 40 Rue
Vivienne. / Mayence, les Fils de B. Schott.
This edition gives occasional fingerings for the left
hand and none at all for the right. Our modern
edition has serupulously respected slurs and dynamic
indications. and our only. editorial intervention
consists of providing complete fingerings for both
hands.
The progressive numbering of the études is faith-
ful to the original, unlike certain current editions
which arbitrarily re—number études 7. & and 9 as 8, 9
and 7.
Ruggero ChiesaPREFACE
A. Villée. / PARIS,
BRANDUS et C?® / 103, Rue Richelieu, ct 40 Ruc
Vivienne.
