PHYSICS FOR ENGINEERS
Subject Code:-22E-21SPH-141

AIM OF THE EXPERIMENT –

To find the numerical aperture of a given optical fiber and hence to find its
acceptance angle.

APPARATUS-
Emitter/Laser, Fiber stand, Concentrator, Optical fiber, Detector, Output unit.

1
NOTE:-
All the units of distance are in millimeter.
Unit of current is ampere.

OBSERVATIONS-

Least count of screw gauge

One pitch scale division (n) = 0.5 mm

Number of divisions on head scale (m) =100

Least count (L.C) n/m = 0.001mm

CALCULATIONS: -

Avg =3.525+4.023+4.505+5.008+5.547+6+4.945+6.325+6.5=46.378/10

So radius(r)=4.63

Distance between the fiber and the detector, d = 0.002m

Radius of the spot, r =0.00463 m

Result:-

Numerical aperture of the optic fiber is =0.92

Angle of acceptance = 67.678

PRECAUTIONS
1. Optical source should be properly aligned with the cable.
2. Distance of the launch point from cable should be properly selected to ensure
that
maximum amount of optical power is transferred to the cable.
3. The optical fiber provided should be handled carefully so as to prevent cracks.

Conclusion:-

-A high numerical aperture allows light to propagate down the fiber in rays both close
to the axis and at various angles, allowing efficient coupling of light into the fiber.
However, a high numerical aperture increases theamount of dispersion as rays at
different angles have different path lengths and therefore takedifferent times to
traverse the fiber. A low numerical aperture may therefore be desirable.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
• It will provide the modest experience that allows students to develop and improve their
experimental skills and develop ability to analyze data.
