Assignment #4

1. Flight attendants experience these injuries. Back and spinal injuries are
generally caused by lifting passenger baggage and reaching into overhead
compartments. Head, neck and shoulder injuries often the result of turbulence or a
rough landing while wrist, back and neck injuries can result from lifting baggage,
repetitive motions and pushing heavy meal carts. Cite at least 2 preventive measures
in each cluster of injuries and explain. (Minimum of 300 words) 5 points.

Flight Attendants have different jobs during their flight with different time frame, which can
cause serious injuries if he/she did not know how to properly operate it. Some of the major
injuries that flight attendant experience are, wrist, back, spinal, head, neck and shoulder injury
caused by pushing and pulling of trolleys, turbulence or rough landing, and lifting passengers
baggage’s, to ensure that they give best hospitality from the passengers by providing their
needs. There are many preventive ways to ensure the safety of the flight attendants during
their flights. To prevent back, spinal, shoulder, wrist, and neck injury is to cooperate during
their trainings before they became a flight attendant, by that they will know on how to properly
lift baggage’s easily to prevent injuries. For back and spinal injury in pushing, pulling, and
reaching food and beverages bellow trolleys, best way to prevent this is, bending your knees
when getting something bellow the trolleys instead of bending your back by this you can
prevent back and spinal injury from bending.

For head, neck, and shoulder injury caused by turbulence or rough landing, one preventive
way to avoid injury is, don’t walk around during turbulence or landing, instead take a seat and
ensure your seatbelt was okay or find a non-occupied seat and lock your seatbelt after you
announce safety precautions. Second way to prevent is, lean your back from your seat and
take a deep breath. In lifting passenger baggages, all flight companies have policy in baggage
weight, do not force yourself for lifting heavy baggages but instead get some help from your
colleagues to lift and bend your knees not your back from lifting. Listen and cooperate in
trainings, bend your knees not your back, don’t force yourself, lean your back in your seats,
ensure the lock of seatbelt, and relax to avoid serious injuries during flights.

2. In the Hospitality industry, poorly designed workplace puts workers at risk getting hurts
and injuries. List at least 3 physical hazards that may result to poor ergonomics
and explain how. (Minimum of 300 words) 5 points

First hazard that can cause injury from our musculoskeletal system is improperly adjusted
working chair. For example, you are working overtime, you yawn, raise your both hands, and
lean back to your chair and you accidentally fell from the floor and hit your head and elbow from
the floor and back from the supporter of the chair badly. To avoid this, all chairs must be
checked and properly assemble. On the other hand, using too much force when lifting boxes
and pack of bond papers that may weaken your back, wrists, and shoulder. One example is,
you are asked to lift boxes from the meeting room and put it in the printing room, These boxes
contains of various pack of bond papers and you force yourself to lift one heavy box on your
own. By this, it may weaken your back, shoulder and wrists and you accidentally drop it from
your feet. Get help when lifting boxes to avoid injuries. Furthermore, awkward movements in
workplace are one of the examples of ergonomics too. For example, you are working overtime
but there are other employees that are working too. You went in the pantry room to make some
coffee and you are listening to music with your air pods and swaying your body through the
sound and forgot to lock the door and your boss and other colleagues saw you dancing and you
just realized that they are laughing on what they saw and you accidentally drop your hot coffee
from your hands and body that causes burns. There are ways to avoid ergonomic hazard in
office. Major way is to observe.
