Week 2
Quarter 1 Plate Tectonics

Competency:
Describe and relate the distribution of active volcanoes, earthquake epicenters, and major mountain belts to Plate
Tectonic Theory. (S10ES-Ia-j-36.1)

Specific Objective:
Describe the distribution of active volcanoes, earthquake epicenters, and major mountain belts.

I. Presentation

Figure 1. Map of earthquake distribution

Figure 1 shows the map of earthquake distribution around the world. The colors red, green, and blue dots on the
figure represent the earthquake epicenters.

Figure 2. Map of active volcanoes

Figure 2 shows the map of active volcanoes around the world. The areas which has color red in the map
represent the presence of volcanoes.
Figure 3. Mountain ranges of the world
Figure 3 shows the map of mountain ranges of the world. The color orange portions indicate mountain ranges of the
world.

I. Application
Directions: Write the letter of the correct answer on the space provided before the number.

A. Study Figure 1 showing the earthquake distribution around the world.

____Q1. How are earthquake distributed on the map?

A. The world’s earthquakes are not randomly distributed over the Earth’s surface.
B. The world’s earthquakes are randomly distributed over the Earth’s surface.

____Q2. Based on figure 1, where are earthquakes located?

A. Some are located near the edges of the continents, mid-continents, some are in mid-continents, while others are in
oceans.
B. Earthquakes are only located near the edges of the continents.

____Q3. Based on figure 1, what are the areas on the map where there’s no earthquakes?

A. In the large part of the Pacific Ocean and northernmost Asia only.
B. In the large part of the Pacific Ocean, northernmost Asia, majority of Europe, eastern portion of North and South
America and western Africa.

____Q4. Why is it important for us to identify areas which are prone to earthquakes?

A. So that necessary precautions could be done if ever you’re living in one of those places.
B. So that you can stop the earthquake whenever it is happening in your area.

B. Study the map of active volcanoes in Figure 2.

____Q5. How are volcanoes distributed?

A. Volcanoes are found along the edges of some continents.

B. Volcanoes are randomly distributed on the map.

____Q6. Based on figure 2, where are volcanoes located?

A. They are located along the edges of some continents only.

B. Majority are found along the edges of some continents, particularly in the western coast of North and
South America, East and South East Asia.

____Q7. Compare the location of majority of earthquake epicenters with the location of volcanoes around the world.

A. Earthquake epicenters and volcanoes are both situated at the same locations.
B. Earthquake epicenters and volcanoes are not located at the same area.

C. Study Figure 3, the orange portions indicate mountain ranges of the world.

____Q8. How will you relate the distribution of mountain ranges with the distribution of earthquake epicenters and
volcanoes?

A. Mountain ranges are not found in places where volcanoes and/or earthquake epicenters are also located.
B. Mountain ranges are found in places where volcanoes and/or earthquake epicenters are also located.
