GENERAL COURSE INFORMATION

Class Structure: While this class is an entirely online class, it does require that you come to campus to take a
proctored midterm and a proctored final exam. Information for students who live outside the Atlanta area can
be found here.

In addition, this class is not a self-paced class. There are weekly deadlines that you must meet to
successfully complete this course.
Class Location: Our class meets online, but at times we can meet in a virtual classroom (see WebEx link in
iCollege) for help and review sessions. Other live online review sessions will also be provided for students
and there is always free online tutoring available.

Credit hours: 3 credit hours

Prerequisite: Exit or exempt from Learning Support Mathematics

Purpose: This course introduces the student to elementary statistical procedures, provides the student with
basic statistical tools needed to describe data and make intelligent statistical decisions, and enables the
student to interpret statistical information.

More information about the topics covered in this course can be found at the end of this
syllabus.

ATTENDANCE/PARTICIPATION POLICY:

Regular attendance/participation in class is required for success in this course and for students to receive
financial aid. Federal requirements include verifying student attendance/participation.

Students who do not plan to attend a course, must officially drop the course by the end of the drop/add
period (first week of classes) to no longer incur charges or have the course appear on their transcript.

Attending/participating in an online class is more than simply logging in to iCollege. Students must complete
an academic related activity such as, submitting an assignment or actively participating in an online
discussion regarding academics, each week of the semester to be counted as attending the course.

Administrative Withdrawal for Non-Attendance: If you do not successfully complete the Syllabus Quiz
by August 27, 2018 at 11:59 p.m. EDT (more time may be given to students who enrolled at the end of the
drop/add period), you will be recorded as NEVER ATTENDED and you will be administratively withdrawn
for non-attendance. (Please note you will likely owe tuition money for this course.)

Administrative Withdrawal for Stopped Attending: If you complete the Syllabus Quiz but not other
academic work by Sept. 21, you will be administratively withdrawn from the course. (You will likely owe
tuition money for the course.)

* The following guidelines are the minimum criteria that must be met to avoid being withdrawn. (To
successfully complete the course requires much more work.)

Completing the Syllabus Quiz with a 100% by 11:59 p.m. EDT on Monday, August 27, 2018 (more
time may be given for students who enrolled at the end of the drop/add period)
You must submit at least one assignment each week. This includes posting to the required Discussion
boards, submitting an assignment in MyMathLab or in iCollege.
Please note that just logging in to iCollege does not constitute meeting the minimum criteria as stated
above.
Enrollment in the class is ultimately the student’s responsibility. If a student desires to withdraw from
the class before the midpoint of the semester, he or she should submit a course withdrawal through
PAWS.
Charges are incurred for the course even if a student is withdrawn from the course. Please

Your participation in this class is vital to your learning and success in this course. Consequently, regular
weekly participation is expected. You are required to log into this class in iCollege at least two (2) days a
week (preferably 4 to 5) and should expect to devote at least three hours to learning the content of the course
(plus completing homework and studying usually takes an additional 6 to 9 hours ). It is expected that you log
into the class prepared for online class discussions, activities, assignments, and exams. Students are
responsible for all material provided in the learning modules.

To meet the graded participation requirement, a student must log in to iCollege, and actively participate in the
discussion board each week. Participation accounts for 5% of the students’ final grade.

First Week of Class: During the first week of the class, you should (1) answer the Introduction Discussion
Question, (2) Register for MyMathLab, (3) Review Learning Materials located in iCollege under
the Content link and (4) complete assignments in MyMathLab. Get started by following these steps (click
here) but don’t forget to read the rest of the syllabus!

PLEASE NOTE: Even if you are waiting on financial aid or do not currently have the money to purchase
the MyMathLab access code, you may register without paying for 14 days. Click here for temporary
access instructions. You will have to purchase access as soon as this grace period ends. DO NOT DELAY
getting started in MyMathLab because you will miss several important, graded assignments. Students can
only have one MyMathLab account. If you do work in two or more MyMathLab accounts, the grades
cannot be transferred and all work will be lost in all accounts except one.

REQUIRED COURSE MATERIALS

Textbook/Software:

MyStatLab access: You will have to register for an account at mystatlab.com.


MyMathLab Access Code: You must purchase a MyStatLab access code for this course. The ISBN
for the access code which contains the electronic textbook is 9780321839053. The ISBN for the
access code along with a hardcopy of the textbook is 9780321876225. Please note: If you took
Math 1070 in a recent semester (Fall 2017 or later) and purchased a MyMathLab access code for a
GSU/Perimeter Math 1070 course, you should not need to purchase the code again. When you log in
to MML it should recognize you and will not ask you for a new access code.

Because an electronic version of the textbook is available in MyStatLab, you do NOT have to purchase a
textbook unless you choose to do so. The textbook is Fundamentals of Statistics, 5th ed., by Sullivan,
Prentice Hall (Pearson), 2018. The MSL Access Code will come bundled free with the purchase of a new
textbook from Perimeter College. The correct access code will NOT be included if you purchase a used
textbook and may not be included or may be the wrong code if you purchase a book from an outside vendor
such as Amazon.com. You will have a 14-day grace period (free temporary access) to obtain the access code.

TI-84 graphing calculator: You are required to have access to a TI-84 calculator. (You may use a TI-83
but you will find a TI-84 much more helpful for this course). A TI-86, 89 or TI-92, TI-Nspire, Casios and
HP calculators are not permitted for this course and cannot be used on the midterm or final exam. You may
not use your phone as a calculator or an “online” calculator on the proctored midterm or final exam.
*****It is CRUCIAL to this course that you have a Ti-84 (or Ti-83) calculator within the first
two weeks of class and know how to use it for everything in the course. You will not have
access to Excel or StatCrunch (a program within MyStatLab) during the midterm or Final
Exam. You will not be provided with tables like those in the textbook (for example a Standard
Normal Distribution table in Chapter 7). Therefore you must know how to calculate
everything using your calculator. There is help on my website showing you how to do
everything you need to do on the calculator.*****

TI-83 or TI-84 is the only permitted calculator for the course. You must have one of these calculators and be
able to perform appropriate tasks on it. Only these calculators are permitted for the proctored midterm and
final. However, no programs or information can be stored in the calculator during the proctored exams.

Computer with Internet Access: You must have access to a reliable computer to complete this course. Be
sure to have a backup plan in case you run into technical difficulties. Deadlines are not extended because of
technical issues.

WebCam and Mic: A working webcam and microphone are required for this course. If you plan
to participate in the online classroom for tutoring or reviews, a working mic will assist in
communication with your instructor and/or tutor. A webcam and microphone are required for
testing via ProctorU, and both will be needed for alternative testing scenarios in the case of
inclement weather interrupting on-campus proctored exams.

instead of on a Perimeter Campus (This is important because you must know what can and cannot be used.
For example, you must have a functioning Webcam and microphone, you cannot use a Chromebook or an
iPad, and other specific requirements you need to know about.)

Offsite Test Request Forms for Midterm Due: Sept 21 (this is for students who will take the exam at a
testing center that is not a Perimeter Campus because they live or will be out of town – ProctorU online is
also available for these cases – click here for details)

Proctored Midterm: October 2, 3, 4, or 5

Midpoint of the semester: Tuesday, October 9 (last day to withdraw with a “W”)

Thanksgiving Holidays: November 19 – 24

Offsite Test Request Forms for Final Due: November 26 (this is for students who live far from any
Perimeter campus and must take their final exam at a testing center that is not Perimeter and not taking
through ProctorU)

Last day to complete any homework, quizzes, or any graded work (no exceptions): December 4 (This is
one day after classes officially end. No work can be done in MyLab Statistics after this date so that I will
have time to post grade averages going into the final exam.)

Proctored Final Exam (on campus or through ProctorU): December 7 or 8

ASSESSMENTS

Participation (5%) Your participation in the course will be assessed by your participation in weekly
discussions. Please see your course calendar on my website for due dates for the discussions. You can
access Discussion topics via the link on the iCollege toolbar or via links contained inside the content
modules.

Midterm Exam (20%). The midterm exam is proctored and must be taken on one of the following dates:
October 2, 3, 4, or 5 (no weekend hours will be available so be sure to plan accordingly). The exam will
cover the content in Chapter 1 to Chapter 6 and you will not be permitted to use your notes. Additional
information will be provided after the semester begins.

Homework (15%). You will have online homework assignments in MyStatLab. (The Orientation
Assignment, Midterm Review, and Final Exam Review are optional. Although you are not required to do the
Orientation Assignment, if you have never used MyMathLab or MyStatLab it would be very helpful to you.)
The lowest four homework grades will be dropped. Please allow yourself plenty of time to complete these
assignments. The course calendar includes information on approximately how long you should allow for the
homework.

Quizzes (15%). There are 11 quizzes located in MyStatLab. The lowest 2 grades will be dropped. You will
be given two attempts per quiz and the higher of the two grades will count toward your overall average.

You can get a third attempt on a quiz if you earn at least an 80% on every homework assignment for that
chapter. (For example, you can get a third attempt on Quiz 1 if you earn an 80% or higher on the homework
for all the Chapter 1 sections: 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, and 1.6.) Only the highest grade of the three attempts
will count toward your overall average.

Tests (20%) There will be four tests throughout the semester.

Test 1: Chapters 1, 2, 3 Test 2: Chapters 4, 5

Test 3: Chapters 6, 7, 8 Test 4: Chapters 9, 10, 11


You can get a second attempt on a test if you earn at least an 80% on every homework assignment for that
chapter. (For example, you can get a second attempt on Test 1 if you earn an 80% or higher on the homework
for all the Chapter 1, 2, and 3 homework sections.) Only the higher grade of the two attempts will count
toward your overall average.

Final Exam (25%). The final exam will be a cumulative exam. You must take the final exam on December 7
or 8 (your choice) on a Perimeter College campus at one of the designated Online Mathematics final exam
times. A formula sheet will be provided at the exam through a pop-up link in the first question of the test.
The formula sheet can be found here. The final exam CANNOT be taken outside of the final exam
period.

The Online Math/CS Department requires most students to take two proctored exams for their online
math/computer science courses – the Midterm Exam and the Final Exam. Below are three options for taking
your proctored exam(s). Please contact me through iCollege email if you plan to test offsite or through
ProctorU.

Test at a Perimeter College/Georgia State University Testing Center (no additional cost to you)
Test at an approved offsite Testing Center (must live more than 50 miles from all Perimeter College
campuses and a fee is charged for the exam – the fee varies based on the location)
Test at home using ProctorU (a live online remote proctoring service) – $19 per exam for midterm (2
hours); $25 for final exam (2.5 hours)

Study Guide in MyStatLab: The Study Guide does not affect your grade in any way. It is a helpful tool to
use when you need extra practice for a specific section and can be used to study for a quiz or for the final
exam. However, it is completely optional and it will not factor into your grade.

Extra Credit Policy: There will be five opportunities to earn bonus points this semester.

1. 5 bonus points on a quiz: Sign up for Remind text messages by September 4th and remain signed up
for text messages throughout the semester until December 8. (If you cannot receive texts and need
an alternate way to do this, please email me.)
2. 5 bonus points on a quiz: a few surveys posted in the announcements throughout the semester (you
will have to be checking announcements regularly to be able to take these surveys during the window
of time they are open)
3. up to 5.5 bonus points on the Midterm Exam: Complete the midterm review in MyStatLab by October
5th but before you take the midterm (the points you get are based on your score on the review. You
can do every problem unlimited times until you get the correct answer. Your score on the review is
multiplied by 0.055. (For example if you earn an 87 on the review, you would get 87 * 0.055 = 4.785
total points added to your midterm.)
4. 5 bonus points on a quiz: Take the “exam appointment quiz” by November 30 to let me know the
date/time of your final exam appointment. Details about this will be released when the exam
appointment system becomes available.
5. up to 5.5 bonus points on the final exam: Complete the final exam review in MyStatLab by December
8 but before taking the final exam (the points you get are based on your score on the review. You can
do every problem unlimited times until you get the correct answer. Your score on the review is
multiplied by 0.055. (For example if you earn an 87 on the review, you would get 87 * 0.055 = 4.785
total points added to your final exam.)

Because you also get your two lowest quizzes and four lowest homework assignments dropped, these are
the only extra credit opportunities. I cannot allow there to be so much extra credit that it artificially inflates
student grades. Your overall grade in the course needs to be an accurate picture of how well you know the
information.

GRADING SCALE

A = 90-100%

B = 80-89%

C = 70-79%

D = 60-69%

F = 0-59%

W = Withdrawal by midpoint

WF = Student-initiated withdrawal after midpoint

OTHER GRADING POLICIES

TEST POLICY: The final exam is a proctored exam and is closed book and closed notes. All cell phones
must be turned OFF. Students will not be allowed to use cell phones, Bluetooth, headphones or any listening
device during an exam. Students cannot access any external websites or materials during the proctored
exams. Any student who is reported by a proctor as having violated these policies during the midterm or final
exam may receive a zero on the exam. While homework and quizzes and MyMathLab tests can be
completed at home, students must still abide by the college’s academic honesty policy. All work submitted
must be your own. Copying, plagiarizing, and assistance during an exam is not permitted.

MAKE-UP POLICY: No make-ups will be given for final exams or midterms. Absence from the final exam
will result in a grade of F for the course unless arrangements are made PRIOR to the administration of the
test.

WITHDRAWAL POLICY: Tuesday, October 9, 2018 is the last day for a regular withdrawal. Students are
permitted to withdraw with a grade of W a maximum of three (3) times in the associate degree program at
Perimeter College. The limit on withdrawals does not apply if a student withdraws from all classes during a
term before the midpoint. However, students are allowed to withdraw from all classes prior to the midpoint
twice without having their withdrawals count against them.Students who withdraw from a class after the limit
has been reached will automatically receive a grade of WF in their classes. Several things to remember:

Although a W does not affect your institutional grade point average, a W does negatively impact your
HOPE grade point average. For additional information on this, consult the Financial Aid Office.
If you withdraw after the midpoint, you will receive a grade of WF that is averaged as an F in your
GPA.

INCOMPLETE POLICY: Assignment of incompletes by an instructor follows the university policy on


incompletes. In particular, incompletes can be assigned at the discretion of the instructor and not the student.

The student must have completed most of the major assignments of the course (generally all but one).
The student must be earning a passing grade in the course in the judgment of the instructor.
A schedule for completion of assignments must be approved prior to the assignment of the incomplete.

OTHER COLLEGE POLICIES

STUDENT ACCOMMODATION FORM: Students who wish to request accommodation for a disability
may do so by registering with the Center for Disability Services. Students may only be accommodated upon
issuance by the Center for Disability Services of a signed Faculty Accommodation Notification and are
responsible for providing a copy of that plan to instructors of all classes in which accommodations are

ACADEMIC HONESTY POLICY (CHEATING/PLAGIARISM) The complete Academic Honesty


Policy can be found in the Academic Conduct Policies and Procedures Section of the Student Handbook.

All work submitted for credit must be your own. Plagiarism will not be tolerated. If you plagiarize or make
an attempt of cheating, you will receive a score of zero for the exam or a grade of F for the course depending
on the severity of the infraction, and appropriate actions will be taken according to the University policy on
plagiarism. Using a cell phone or any mobile devices during an exam or having other windows open during
an electronic exam count as cheating and will not be tolerated.

The Department of Mathematics at Perimeter College of Georgia State University has the right to regard
finding unauthorized material in your possession/use or calculator memory or cell phone and having other
windows open during any test or the final exam as cheating. If you cheat or make an attempt to do so, you
may be allowed to complete the test but as a consequence, a score of zero will be assigned on the test which
will not be replaced by the Final Exam score. You may receive an F for the course depending on the severity
of the infraction, and appropriate action will be taken according to the University policy on academic
honesty.

CAMPUS CARRY: Georgia’s Campus Carry legislation allows anyone properly licensed in the state of
Georgia to carry a handgun in a concealed manner on university property with noted exceptions. Information
about the law can be found at safety.gsu.edu/campus-carry. It is the responsibility of the license holder to
know the law. Failure to do so may result in a misdemeanor charge and may violate the Georgia State Student
Code of Conduct. You can find answers to other Frequently Asked Questions on implementation of Campus
Carry here: safety.gsu.edu/campus-carry. Please remember concealed carry is prohibited in individual
faculty offices and office suites, such as the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. If you think
someone is carrying a handgun in a restricted area, call university police at (404) 413-3333. Students, faculty
and staff should not attempt to monitor or enforce compliance with the statute.

COURSE CONTENT/OBJECTIVES
As a result of completing this course, students will be able to:

Analyze statistical problems using critical thinking skills, such as deciding on appropriate statistics to
measure and suitable tests to be performed;

Support statistical analyses using the course-required calculator whenever possible;

Define basic descriptive and inferential statistical terms;

Define terms of Experimental Design;

Select a random sample;

Construct frequency and relative frequency tables, histograms and boxplots, and categorize the shape;

Define the mean, median, mode, standard deviation, range, and quartiles and calculate their values for a set of
data using the course required calculator;

Identify outliers from a data set;

Calculate, interpret and apply z-scores;

Understand and apply basic concepts of probability;

Compute regular, compound, and conditional probabilities of events from a contingency table;

Compute binomial probabilities and their mean and standard deviation;

Make appropriate checks for normality of distributions and apply the properties of normal and standard
normal distributions to determine probabilities;

Use the Central Limit Theorem to describe the sampling distribution of the sample mean and sample
proportion;

Determine confidence intervals for the mean and proportion of one population for large samples or normally
distributed populations;

Apply the basic model of hypothesis testing and select the appropriate distribution to make inferences about a
population mean and proportion or the difference between two population means and proportions, including
the use of z-, t-, statistics;

Write a regression line equation which best represents data relating two variables and interpret and/or make
predictions from the line;

Compute the linear correlation coefficient and coefficient of determination for a regression line using the
course required calculator and interpret its significance.
