EARTHQUAKE ENGINEERING
FINAL EXAMINATION
23 February 2022

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS:
1. This is an online examination.
2. It will start at 6PM of 23 February 2022 and ends at 11:59PM of 24 February 2022. All papers
must be uploaded on or before the deadline date and time.
3. The solution paper for each problem must be using the prescribed Baylon template.
4. You may use either the handwriting work or typewritten work using MS Word application or can
be combination. The paper must be saved in PDF format when uploading in the “assignment” of
MS Teams.
5. The filename format is
<Surname>_<Firstname>_EARQUAK_FE.pdf
6. Always summarize your final answers in the last part of your solution paper.
For example:
Final Answers:
A. structure period. T = 0.795 second
B. seismic coefficients Ca and Cv . Ca = 0.440, Cv = 0.336
C. base shear. V = 7256 kN
7. Not following the above instructions will make your examination “NULL & VOID.”

Problem 1: (30%)
Using NSCP 2015 (1st printing), find the design base shear for a 5-story steel special moment-resisting
frame building shown below, given the following information:
Z = 0.4
Seismic source type = B
Distance to seismic source = 5 km
Soil profile type = SC
I = 1.0
R = 8.5
W = 7232.808 kN

In solving this example, the following steps are followed:

A. Determine the structure period.

B. Determine the seismic coefficients Ca and Cv .
C. Determine base shear.

Problem 2: (40%)

A 9-story building has a moment resisting steel frame for a lateral force-resisting system. Find the vertical
distribution of lateral forces Fx . The following information is given:

Zone 4
W = 16734.21 kN
Cv = 0.56
R = 8.5
I = 1.0
T = 1.06 sec.
V = 1040. kN

In solving this problem, the following steps are followed:

A. Determine Ft.
B. Find Fx at each level.

Problem 3: (30%)

A single story building has a rigid roof diaphragm. Lateral forces in both directions are resisted by shear
walls. The mass of the roof can be considered to be uniformly distributed, and in this example, the weight
of the walls is neglected. In actual practice, particularly with concrete shear walls, the weight of the walls
should be included in the determination of the Center of Mass (CM). The following information is given:
Design base shear: V = 444.82 kN
Wall rigidities: RA= 4378.17 kN/m. RB= 1459.39 kN/m. RC = RD = 2918.78 kN/m
Center of mass: xm = 12.192 m, ym = 6.096 m

Determine the following:

A. Eccentricity and rigidity properties.

B. Direct shear in walls A and B.
C. Plan irregularity requirements.
D. Torsional shear in walls A and B.
E. Total shear in walls A and B.
