Pointing Devices
What Is Pointing Device ?
A pointing device, or sometimes called a pointing tool, is a hardware
input device that allows the user to move the mouse cursor in a
computer program or GUI operating system. Using a pointing device,
you can point at or manipulate any object or text on the screen. For
example, using a pointing device you could point at and select an icon
from a list of icons.
The mouse is a very famous pointing, as well as input devices they are
extremely easy to use, and the operations and tasks performed by
them, have great consistency, accuracy, and speed.
For Example, to copy a file/folder from one location to another location
is very simple using a mouse but if you use a keyboard it can be a very
difficult task for new users for the pro ones who are more familiar with
the shortcuts available for performing some specific tasks can be done
easily.
What is the most common pointing device?
For desktop computers, the most common pointing device is the
computer mouse. For laptop computers, the most common pointing
device is the touchpad. Finally, for smartphones and tablets, the most
common pointing devices is your finger on a touch screen.

1- Mouse
A computer mouse is a handheld hardware input
device that controls a cursor in a GUI (graphical
user interface) and can move and select text,
icons, files, and folders on your computer.
For desktop computers, the mouse is placed on a flat surface (e.g.,
mouse pad or desk) in front of your computer. The picture is an
example of a Logitech desktop computer mouse with two primary
buttons and a wheel.
Modern computer mice have different resolutions. Some of the
cheapest optical mice are only capable of resolution at 800 dpi, or 800
dpi, while the best mice for computer gaming have a resolution of over
10,000 dpi.
The inventor of the mouse is Douglas Engelbart He invented the mouse
in 1961 and a report was published in 1965 The first version of the
device from 1964 was an angular wooden box with two circular metal
plates at the bottom and one push button on the top. Engelbart filed
for a patent for the device in 1967 , which was granted in 1970 (patent)

What are the uses of a mouse?
1) Move the mouse cursor - The primary function is to move the
mouse pointer on the screen.
2) Point - Once the mouse is moved, you can point something out for
another user or point a digital object. For example, in a game you
can use the mouse to point a gun in the direction to shoot.
3) Open or execute a program - Once you've moved the pointer to
an icon, folder, or another object clicking or double-clicking that
object opens the document or executes the program
4) Select - A mouse also allows you to select text or a file or highlight
and select multiple files at once.
5) Drag-and-drop - Once something is selected, it can also be moved
using the drag-and-drop method.
6) Scroll - When working with a long document or viewing a long
web page, you may need to scroll up or down.
Types of Mouse
1) Mechanical Mouse
Mechanical mouse encloses a rubber or metal ball in it. The
movement of the cursor depends on the movement of the
ball. This mouse is normally used on a mouse pad. A mouse
pad is a small pad made of rubber or foam to provide easy
movement for the mouse. It also protects the mouse from dust and dirt.

2) Optical Mouse
An optical mouse contains no ball inside it. It uses
a device that emits light to detect the mouse
movement. An optical sensor or laser is used in
these types of mouses. Furthermore, It is more
costly than a mechanical mouse.

3) Wireless Mouse
A wireless or cordless mouse is a type of mouse that
does not require a wire to work. It transmits data using
wireless technology like radio waves or infrared light
waves.

4) Trackball
A trackball can also be used as an alternative
to a mouse. This device also has buttons
similar to those on a mouse.
It holds a large moving ball on the top. The body of the trackball is not
moved. The ball is rolled with fingers. The position of the cursor on the
screen is controlled by rotating the ball.
5) Touchpad/ Trackpad
A touchpad is a small, plain surface over which the
user moves his finger. The user controls the
movement of the cursor on the screen by moving his
fingers on the touchpad. It is also known as a
trackpad.
6) Pointing Stick
A pointing stick is a pressure-sensitive device. It is
similar to a pencil eraser and exits between keys on
the keyboard. When the user pushes the pointing
stick, the pointer on the screen also moves. It
demands no extra space or cleaning like a mouse. A
pointing stick is normally used with notebook computers.

2) Keyboard
A keyboard is one of the primary input
devices used with a computer. Similar to an
electric typewriter, a keyboard is composed
of buttons used to create letters, numbers,
and symbols, and perform additional functions. The following sections
