At half rated armature voltage

speed behavior of shunt –wound DC motor at flux

shunting:

Fig. 1:at rated armature voltage

Questions:

1. Why the field current is not started from zero?

because if we start from zero the motor will run away

2. What happened the speed when the armature voltage is
decreased to its half rated value ?

the speed will become half of the speed at rated value

3.separately DC motor has the following name plate

Va =205v Ia = 1.6 A Vf =205 v If = 0.34 A

Pout = 0.3 kw n= 1900 rpm R f = 400 ohm Ra = 8 ohm

Speed no load =??? when field current at half of rated

2 π∗1900
w= 60 =199 rad/sec

Va−Ia Ra 205−1.6∗8
w rated = K IF = K∗0.34 = 199 K= 2.84
va 205
w nl = = =424.5rad /sec
k i f 2.84∗0.17

60∗424.5
N nl = 2π = 4053.7 rpm

conclusion :
1. To know how to turn on the separately motor with load and
how to use the control unit ,break unit , universal power
supply ,universal resistor and universal power meter .
2. learn how to measure the speed , voltage and current .
3. to know how to increase the speed at constant voltage by
decreasing the field current using flux shunting ( increasing
the resistance that added to the parallel of the field
resistance)
4. 1the relationship between speed and flux is exponentially.
5. when the flux shunting is maximum the field current is
minimum then the speed is become much greater than rated
speed.
when the voltage is half of rated the speed is halved too.

Questions:

1. calculate the output power at no load , at half load , at full

load ?
Pout =T * W

2 π∗1900
at full load : w = 60
=199 rad/sec , Tn =1.5 N.m

Pout=1.5 *199 =298.5 w

2 π∗1960
At half load : : w = 60
=205.25 rad/sec , T =0.6 N.m

Pout=0.6 *205.25 =123.15 w

2 π∗2000
at no- load : Wnl = 60
=209.44 rad/sec , T =0 N.m

Pout=0 *209.44 =0 w

2. Compare voltage is decreased to its half rated the load

characteristic of separately DC motor at different
values of armature voltage?
The speeds will decrease by half of the rated armature voltage

3. calculate the efficiency at full load for the two cases of

voltage?
Pout
ᶯ= p¿
×100 %

Pout(at rated ) =W *T = 199 * 1.5 = 298.5 w

Pin =Va * Ia =205*1.8 = 369 w
298.5
ᶯ= 369
×100 %=80.9 %

conclusion:
1. know how the load affect the speed (decreasing the speed when the
load increase).
2. The relation between the torque and the armature current is
approximately linear.
3. The relation between the torque and the speed is inverse
relationship.
