ASSIGNMENT #4

This chapter/presentation discusses about the Comprehensive Training for DPWH Field
Engineers.
The main focus of this chapter is on the construction of bituminous concrete surface course.
Bituminous concrete mixture shall be composed of aggregates, mineral filter, hydrated lime and
bituminous material, constructed and laid hot onto the base that is being prepared and shall follow
the specification and conformity of lines, grades, thickness and typical cross-section that is
according to the prepared plans. Samples and components of the bituminous mixture shall undergo
different laboratory test three weeks before the production in order to know and maintain its
quality.
Each job-mix formula should have a single value for the percentage of aggregate passing
each specified sieve size, percentage of bituminous material to be added, the temperature of the
mixture delivered on the road, the kind and percentage of additive to be used and the kind and
percentage of mineral filler to be used. After several tests, the mixture shall have a minimum
compressive strength of 1.4 MPa (200psi), a mass percent air voids with the range of 3-5 and the
mixture shall also have an Index of Retained Strength of not less than 70% when tested by
AASHTO T 165.
For a bituminous mineral, it shall be either Medium Curing (MC) Cut-back Asphalt or
Asphalt Cement, whichever is called for in the Bill of Quantities. It shall conform to the
requirements of Item 702, Bituminous Materials. Asphalt cement shall conform to the
requirements of AASHTO M 226 Liquid Asphalts Liquid asphalt shall conform to MC of
AASHTO M 82. Aggregates shall conform to the requirements of Item 703, Aggregates. Mineral
Filler shall conform to the requirements of Item 703A, Mineral Filler. Hydrated lime shall conform
to the requirements of Item 701, Construction Lime of PHILSA (Philippine Standard Association)
1 1-68 or ASTM 207-76.
The proportion of bituminous material on the basis of total dry aggregate shall be from 5-
8 mass %. 0.5-1.0 mass % of hydrated lime dry aggregate basis shall be added to the mixture.
Here are some of the equipment used in the construction. Bituminous mixing plant such as
Schematic Diagram of a Traditional Asphalt Plant and Asphalt Batching Plant. Some equipment
and materials used are Plant Scales, Tanks, Driers, Screens, Bins, Bituminous Control Gate,
Thermometric Equipment, Aggregate Cold Feed Bins, Dust Collectors and Truck Scales.
For the hauling equipment, the requirement for trucks shall have a cover of canvass or other
suitable material so that the mixture would be protected from the weather. Bituminous pavers shall
be self-contained, power propelled units, provided with an adjustable screed or strike-off assembly.
Rollers, equipment shall be in good condition, and be operated at speed slow enough to avoid
displacement of the bituminous mixture.
Payments during the construction should cover all materials and equipment, tools and labor
and incidentals that are needed to complete this Item.
