Fault finding - Introduction 85A
Faults

Faults are declared as either present or stored (depending on whether they appeared in a certain context and have
disappeared since, or whether they remain present but have not been diagnosed within the current context).

The present or stored status of faults should be taken into consideration when the diagnostic tool is used after the
+ after ignition feed (without acting on the system components).

For a present fault, apply the procedure described in the Interpretation of faults section.

For a stored fault, note the faults displayed and apply the Notes section.

If the fault is confirmed when the instructions in the Notes section are applied, the fault is present. Deal with the fault

If the fault is not confirmed, check:

– the electrical lines corresponding with the faulty part,
– the connectors for these lines (for oxidation, bent pins, etc.),
– the resistance of the component detected as faulty,
– the condition of the wires (melted or split insulation, wear).

cardiagn.com
Check conformity

The aim of the conformity check is to check data that does not produce a fault on the diagnostic tool because the
data is inconsistent. Therefore, this phase allows us to:
– carry out fault finding on faults that do not have a fault display, and which may correspond to a customer
complaint.
– a check that the system is operating correctly and that there is no risk of a fault recurring after repairs.

This section gives the fault finding procedures for statuses and parameters and the conditions for testing them.

If a status is not behaving normally or a parameter is outside the permitted tolerance values, consult the
corresponding fault finding page.

Customer complaints - Fault finding chart

If the test with the diagnostic tool is OK but the customer complaint is still present, the fault should be treated by
customer complaints.

A synopsis of the general procedure to follow is provided on the following page in the form of a flow chart.

4. FAULT FINDING PROCEDURE (continued)

Wiring test:

Fault finding problems

Disconnecting the connectors and/or manipulating the wiring harness may temporarily remove the cause of a fault.
Electrical measurements of voltage, resistance and insulation are generally correct, especially if the fault is not
present when the analysis is made (stored fault).

Visual inspection
Look for damage under the bonnet and in the passenger compartment.
Carefully check the protective parts, insulators and wiring harness routing.
Look for signs of oxidation.

Manipulation test
While manipulating the wiring harness, use the diagnostic tool to note any change in fault status from stored to
present.
Check that the connectors are properly locked.
Apply light pressure to the connectors.

cardiagn.com
Twist the wiring harness.
If there is a change in status, try to locate the source of the fault.

Inspection of each component

Disconnect the connectors and check the appearance of the clips and tabs, as well as the crimping (no crimping on
the insulating section).
Make sure that the clips and tabs are properly locked into the sockets.
Check that no clips or tabs have been dislodged during connection.
Check the clip contact pressure using an appropriate model of tab.

Resistance check
Check the continuity of entire lines, then check them section by section.
Look for a short circuit to earth, +12 V or to another wire.

If a fault is detected, repair or replace the wiring harness.

5. FAULT FINDING LOG

IMPORTANT
Any fault on a complex system requires thorough fault finding with the appropriate tools. The
FAULT FINDING LOG, which should be completed during the procedure, enables you to keep
track of the procedure which is carried out. It is an essential component when consulting the
IMPORTANT! manufacturer.

IT IS THEREFORE MANDATORY TO FILL OUT A FAULT FINDING LOG EACH TIME FAULT FINDING IS
CARRIED OUT.

You are always asked for this sheet:

– when requesting technical assistance from the Techline,
– for approval requests when replacing parts for which approval is obligatory,
– to be enclosed when returning monitored parts on request. The log is needed for warranty compensation,
and enables better analysis of the removed parts.

cardiagn.com
6. SAFETY ADVICE

The safety instructions must be followed at all times when working on components, to avoid damage or injury:
– make sure that the battery is properly charged to avoid damaging the computers with a low load,
– use the appropriate tools.

Battery disconnection procedure:

– switch off the ignition,
– switch off all consumers,
– wait at least 1 minute for the electronic systems to switch off,
– disconnect the battery, starting with the negative terminal.

WIPERS - WASHING
Fault finding - System operation 85A
The wiper function is split between two computers (UCH and the Protection and Switching Unit). The link between
these two computers is provided by the vehicle multiplex network.

The UCH interprets the driver's requests through the steering column controls and the rain and light sensor:

– Front wipers: The UCH transmits the request to the Protection and Switching Unit.

– Rear wiper: The UCH controls the wipers directly.

The role of the Protection and Switching Unit is to control power for the wiper system. It governs the operation of the
front wipers, the wiping speed (intermittent, low speed, high speed) and the bi-directional pump for washing the
headlights.

The steering column supplies power directly to the front/rear wipers bi-directional pump.

WIPERS - WASHING
Fault finding - System operation 85A
The wiper function is divided into two sub-functions: controlling the wipers and wiper power.

1. Wiper command

a) By the driver

The UCH receives the request from the driver through the steering column controls.

The UCH requests the Protection and Switching Unit through the multiplex network, to supply power to the front
wiper motor, and the headlight washer pump.
The UCH orders rear wiper operation when the reverse gear is engaged, if the front wipers are active.
The steering column switch controls the front and rear washer pump directly.

The following control statuses can be viewed:

ET027 Windscreen wiper park position

ET077 Wiper position

ET096 Wiper intermittent ring position

ET078 Front windscreen washer request

ET079 Rear screen washer request

ET080 Rear screen wiper request

ET097 Rear screen wiper park position

b) By the rain sensor

The rain and light sensor is a single one-piece sensor fitted on the windscreen. It is linked by a serial connection to
the UCH.

The rain sensor can activate the wipers automatically (reset the steering column switch to 0 each time the engine is
turned off then reapply +12 V after ignition to activate the function). It determines the wiping speed in relation to
several parameters (external temperature, vehicle speed, rain quantity, tunnel conditions, nighttime conditions...), it
informs the UCH, which transmits the request to the Protection and Switching Unit, which then executes the request
to operate the wipers.

It is possible to view the status of the sensor using the status ET114 Request to operate wipers via the rain
sensor.

The sensor configuration can be viewed using the configuration reader LC044 Rain/light sensor and altered using
the request CF035 Rain/light sensor within the control function CF118 UCH type.

WIPERS - WASHING
Fault finding - System operation 85A
2. Wiper power

The UCH controls the supply to the rear screen wiper motor.

The operation of the rear screen wiper motor can be checked using the command AC007 Rear screen wiper in the
UCH.

The UCH transmits a request for the windscreen wiper motor and the headlight washers pump to the Protection and
Switching Unit which feeds these components.

The operation of the windscreen wiper motor can be checked using the commands AC005 Low speed wiper and
AC006 High speed wiper in the Protection and Switching Unit.

The operation of the headlight washer pump can be viewed using the command AC013 Headlight washers relay in
the UPC.
