SWADES

SYNOPSIS

SWADES is a film set in modern-day India that addresses issues that affect the country's
population on a grassroots level. The India of SWADES is vibrant, diverse, and multifaceted, and
it is here that Mohan Bhargava [Shah Rukh Khan], a brilliant young scientist working as a project
manager for NASA, returns in search of his childhood nanny. What begins as a modest mission
motivated by nostalgia and devotion becomes a literal and symbolic trip to the centre of rural

India. In the village of Charanpur, Mohan meets his nanny, Kaveriamma [Kishori Ballal], the
embodiment of motherhood, together with an outstanding young woman Gita [Gayatri Joshi]
and her younger brother Chikku [Master Smit Sheth]. Mohan starts interacting with the
Panchayat, which is led by the dogmatic but just village chief. Along the journey, he meets Mela
Ram [Dayashanker Pandey], a weird but fascinating character who sees Mohan as a ticket to
the chain of eateries he plans to open on the American highways. Mohan befriends the village
children, who are closely linked to the country's future, as well as the local postmaster Nivaran
[Rajesh Vivek], who is entrenched in his old ways. Soon, Mohan learns that it is his scientific
temperament, as well as his grasp of societal complexity, that would motivate the villagers to
join a campaign to improve their lives.

MANAGEMENT LESSONS

LEADERSHIP

In the film, leadership is demonstrated when Mohan leads a project to generate power and all of
the villagers follow him to completion.
Leadership comprises an individual's, group's, or organization's ability to "lead," influence, and
direct other individuals, teams, or entire organisations, both as a research topic and as a practical
talent.

MOTIVATION

This expect can be seen in the film when Sharukh Khan tries to persuade the postman of the
importance of education for children. Similarly, in an organisation, one should be motivated or
should motivate others to do their best. A successful organisation is one in which people are
motivated to achieve goals. It must be a regular occurrence for the workforce to break through
the ceiling in order to reach new heights.

CONVINCING POWER

In the film, there is a scene where the children say and try to persuade the passengers on the
train to buy 25p water. When no one was taking water, he targeted a man and personally asked
and convinced him to take water, and he was successful. Similarly, in an organisation, a Boss, a
leader, or a manager should have the persuasive power to persuade all members of the
organisation to work toward a common goal.

TEAMWORK

Teamwork can be seen in the film when Mohan was able to empower the community to take
their needs into their own hands, and the villagers began working as a team collectively. This is
referred to as teamwork, and it is critical for any team in an organisational context to succeed. A
team's four key characteristics are a shared goal, interdependence, boundedness and stability,

the ability to manage their own work and internal processes, and the ability to operate within a
larger social system.

INFLUENCING POWER

Influence is the ability to have a significant impact on someone or something. When someone
influences someone else, they are indirectly but significantly changing a person or thing.

In the film, Shahrukh Khan tells the villagers that it is critical for everyone to take the initiative
and stand together for a common goal.

As seen in the film, the villagers claim that this village will never change, but Shahrukh Khan
explains that change is possible if everyone wants it. Similarly, in the organisation, one should
influence others in the right direction so that all members work together to achieve a common
goal.

TAKING RESPONSIBILITIES

The term "responsibility" is derived from the Latin word responses, which means "to respond."
There are several different definitions of the noun. It can also be another word for
trustworthiness, as in "He demonstrated his responsibility by arriving on time to practise."

When Amma tells Shahrukh Khan about her problems, he tells her that she wants to find a boy
for her to marry and that she wants the students for her. So Shahrukh Khan accepted
responsibility for the problem and devised a solution. Similarly, in an organisation, one should
accept responsibility for solving problems and achieving the organization's goals.
