SESSION ENDING EXAMINATION (TERM-II), MARCH 2022

SAMPLE QUESTION PAPER
CLASS-XII TIME: 02 HOURS
MAX. MARKS: 35
PHYSICS THEORY (042)
General Instructions:
(i) There are 12 questions in all. All questions are compulsory.
(ii) This question paper has three sections: Section A, Section B and Section C.
(iii) Section A contains three questions of two marks each. Section B contains eight questions of three marks
each. Section C contains one case study-based question of five marks.
(iv) There is no overall choice. However, an internal choice has been provided in one question of two marks
and two questions of three marks. You have to attempt only one of the choices in such questions.
(v) You may use log tables if necessary but use of calculator is not allowed.

SECTION-A
Q.NO. QUESTON MARKS
1 (a). X-rays incident on a photosensitive surface to cause photoelectric 2

neglected, find the relation between the de Broglie wavelength (λ) of the
electrons emitted to the energy (E) of the incident photons.
(b). Draw the E vs λ graph
2 (a). Define the term ‘ionization energy’. 2
(b). How would the ionization energy change when electron in hydrogen
atom is replaced by a article of mass 200 times that of the electron but
having the same charge?
OR
Calculate the shortest wavelength of spectral lines emitted in Balmer
Series. (Given: Rydberg constant, R = 107 m-1).
3 (a). Find the wavelength of electromagnetic waves of frequency 5 x 1019 2
Hz in free space.
(b). Give its two applications.
SECTION – B
4 (a). State the law of radioactive decay. 3
(b). Plot a graph showing the number (N) of undecayed nuclei as a
function of time (t) for a given radioactive sample having half-life T1/2.
Depict in the plot, the number of undecayed nuclei at (i). t = 3 T1/2 and
(ii). t = 5 T1/2.
5 (a). Plot a graph to show the variation of the angle of deviation as a 3
function of incidence for light passing through a prism.
(b). Derive an expression for refractive index of the prism in terms of
angle of minimum deviation and angle of prism.
OR

6 Why photoelectric effect cannot be explained on the basis of wave nature 3

7 (a). Define the term (i). ‘Mass defect’ and (ii). ‘Binding Energy’ for a 3
nucleus and then state the relation between the two quantities.
(b). For a given nuclear reaction, the B.E. per nucleon of the product
nucleus per nuclei is more than that for original nucleus per nuclei. Is the
nuclear reaction exothermic or endothermic in nature? Justify your
answer.
8 (a). State Huygen’s princple for construction of wave. 3
(b). Verify the law of reflection using the Huygen’s principle.
9 With neat labelled energy-band diagrams distinguish between 3
Conductors, Semi-conductors and Insulators.

(a). The zener diode is fabiricated by heavily doping both p an n sides of
the junction.
(b). A photodiode, when used as a detector of optical signals is operated
under reverse bias.
(c). The band gap of the semiconductor used for fabrication of visible
LEDs must atleast be 1.8 eV.
SECTION – C
12 CASE STUDY
The total internal reflection of light is used in diamond polishing to create a gleaming
brilliance. It is adjusted by polishing the diamond with specific cuts so that the majority of
light rays approaching the surface are incident with an angle of incidence greater than the
critical angle. As a result, they are subjected to multiple reflections and eventually emerge
from the top of the diamond. This gives the diamond a brilliant gleam.
