Topic SOUTHEAST ASIAN MUSIC

Lesson 2 LOI GRATHONG (RHYTHMIC PATTERNS)

Objectives: At the end of the lesson, learners are able to;


(1) identify the rhythm syllable for each pitch
(2) clap appropriate rhythm
(3) relate the song to the life of Thai people

Learning Introduction:
Development Learners will name the pitch based on their previous lesson/ assignment.

Lesson Proper:
The teacher will ask learners to differentiate pitch from rhythm through examples.

Imitation- Learners will imitate how the teacher clap the rhythmic patterns.
Exploration- Learners will try to clap some more rhythmic patterns.

Literacy- Learners will be introduced to rhythmic technique, the kodaly rhythm


syllable.

They will be asked to write the appropriate rhythm syllable for Loi Grathong.

Evaluation Improvisation- Learners will be asked to change the last phrase from the song and
they are allowed to use different rhythm but same pitch.

Synthesis The teacher will ask the learners about the meaning of the song, " as we push away
we pray, we can see a better day ". Then learners will describe that it is Thai people
form of prayer every end of the year, that they are sorry for their wrong doings and
that they wish for better days.

Lesson 3 RASA SAYANG (IMPROVISATION)

Objectives: At the end of the lesson, learners are able to;


(1) identify the pitch names of a given southeast asian music
(2) create own lyrics out of the melody of Rasa Sayang
(3) relate the song to life experience.

Learning Introduction:
Development Learners will clap the rhythm learned in the previous lesson, Loi Grathong, a Thai folk
song.

Lesson Proper:
Attentive Listening- Learners will be asked to listen to the Malaysian folk song, Rasa
Sayang. Background information of the song will be given. Guide questions will also
be provided.
Engaged Listening: With the guide questions in mind, learners will actively listen to
the song while the english translation of the lyrics is being presented.

Enactive Listening: After answering the guide questions, learners will name pitch
then, they will be asked to sing it.

Evaluation Creating World Music: Learners will create their own lyrics answering the last question
from the guide question which is; What will you tell the child if he doesn’t get what he
wants?

Synthesis Integrating World Music: Learners will be asked to dedicate the lyrics to their
classmate.
