Topic: Aerospace Industry - An Overview

Introduction:

A lecture on “Aerospace Industry – An Overview” was given by Mr. Harsha R, Mechanical Design Engineer
st
on 21 May 2021. In that lecture he discussed about some of the processes carried out in the Aerospace industry in
brief.

The Topics he discussed in this lecture are as listed below:

1. Aircraft Industry – Developing an Aircraft

 Classification of Aircraft Industry
 Development of Aircraft
2. Trends in Modern day Aircraft Development
 New generation of Aircrafts
 New Technologies
3. Job Opportunities in Aerospace Industry
 Job Types
 Pre-requisites

Aircraft Industry – Developing an Aircraft:

|-> Classification :
He mentioned that Aerospace is mainly divided into two sectors of study namely Aeronautical which deals
with the Aircrafts and another sector is Space Tech which deals with the Satellites, Rockets, etc. Aeronautical
industry is sub-divided into Commercial and Military Aviation Industry i.e., based on the purpose of the aircrafts. In
Commercial Aviation we see three types of aircrafts namely:

 Passenger Aircraft
 Business Jets
 Cargo Aircrafts

These aircrafts serve the peoples who pays them i.e., these are used by common peoples for travel, business and
cargo transportation purposes.

In Military we can see mainly four types of Aircrafts namely:

 Fighter Aircrafts
 Tankers
 Bombers
 Reconnaissance

|-> Development of Aircraft:

He said there are mainly four stages of Aircraft development:

Design =>> Manufacturing/Procurement =>> Assembly =>> Testing and Delivery

Design :-

 Requirement Kick-off: Every design process is initiated based on the customer requirement, like
what all the parameters does customer need in the aircraft.
 Preliminary Design: Once the requirements are known, then a preliminary design is created to show
to the stakeholders.
 Concept Review with Stakeholders: Then it is reviewed by the stakeholders to make some changes.
 Critical Design Review: After changes are implemented in the design a critical design is created and
reviewed for final drawings.
 Prepare Drawings and Release: Once the design seems possible to make into reality, then they
proceed to next stage i.e., Manufacturing.

Manufacturing/ Procurement :-

 Analysing Drawing Requirement: It includes understanding what are the raw materials required and
it’s stock size required and GD&T (Geometry Dimensioning and Tolerencing)
 Prepare manufacturing Sequence: It involves the planning and arranging the maching operation in
sequence.
 Source Vendors: Based on the facility available to manufacture the parts, some of the parts are
manufactured by them selves and other parts are assigned to the vendors based on their
capabilities.
 Procurement and Manufacturing: After procuring the parts from the vendors, there are various pre-
stages are processed before assembly.
 Release for Assembly: Finally all the parts are sent for assembling to get the final Aircraft.
Assembly :-

 Order the Manufacture Fixtures and Tools: All the required tools and fixtures are ordered, which
are required for assembly.
 Component Assembly: All spare parts are assembled to form a component.
 System Assembly: All the components are assembled to form a System of working components.
 Full Assembly: All the systems are assembled to work in hormony to form a Complete Aircraft ready
to fly for test.

Testing and Delivery :-

He explained that an aircraft is tested in 3 different levels:

 Component Testing: Each and every component of the aircraft are tested to check whether that
componet is in good condition as intended or not. Ex:- Gasket, Seals, fasteners, etc.
 System Testing: Testing every systems of the aircraft to check whether they are working as
intended or not. Ex:- Landing Gear, ECS(Environmental Control System) testing, Flight Controls Test,
etc.
 Flight Testing: Various parameters are checked when the aircraft is airborn or in flight. Ex:- Flutter
Test, CG test, etc.

After successfully testing the Aircraft it is delivered to the customer.

Flight Testing of A380:-

Then he showed a video on Flight Test of A380. In which a test pilot was explaining how dangerous it is to do
a Flight test. He said safety is the top most priority in every aircraft development.

Kaun Banega Triviapathi:-

Then he took a quiz, in which he asked about 20 questions about Aeronautic and Space tech sectors. In
which I got to know 12 new trivia in Aerospace industry.

Two main catagories of Aircraft Industry:-

Aircraft is mainly gets it’s shape by Airframers and the thrust to fly by Propulsion. We can say that Airframers
forms skeleton of the aircraft and Propulsion acts as soul of the Aircraft.

Assembly of Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner:-

Then he showed us the timelapse video of an Aiframe assembly of the 787-9 Dreamliner.

Recent Trends in Aviation:

Then he discussed about the 4 most trending topics in Aviation industry. They are:

 All Electric Aircrafts

 More Electric Aircrafts
 Air Taxi
 Additive Manufacturing
 Digital Twin
 Block chain
 Swarm Drones
 Supersonic Aircrafts

Job Opportunities:

Then he discussed about the Job Opportunities in Aerospace industry for different Engineering Branches. For
each brach he has exlained what are job roles they can opt for.

Then he answered some of our questions and the session ended.
