HOW TO BRAND YOUR HANDMADE BUSINESS // Describe Your Business

Start off by choosing 3 to 4 words that you would use to describe your business style or what you
want your brand to portray. For example, if you sell handmade hair bows and other accessories
for girls then you might choose words such as, “girly”, “fun”, and “chic”.

Another example, let’s say you own a woodworking business that uses reclaimed wood to create
beautiful signs. Some examples of words to choose would be “rustic”, “earthy”, and “recycled”.

HOW TO BRAND YOUR HANDMADE BUSINESS // Develop a Mood Board

A mood board is basically a collection of images, colors, and fonts that you would like to use
to establish a foundation for your actual brand. You’re free to create a physical board if you’d
like, but my favorite way to do a brand board is through Pinterest. Pinterest is like a big giant
playground when it comes to finding things for mood boards. Create a Pinterest board and call it
“Mood Board” or “Brand Board”. You can set the board to private if you’d like.

Next, take the keywords that you chose to describe your brand and search those words on
Pinterest. Choose anything that you would like to use for inspiration for your brand and pin it
to your board. Photos, color palettes, fonts, etc. Try to find as many inspiring things as you can.

Once you have a good amount of inspiration, head on over to Canva.com and create a new project
that is 1000px wide and 3000px tall.

Upload and place 3 or 4 images to your mood board to draw inspiration from. Here’s an example
of mine.

Next you’ll want to choose your color palette. If you don’t already have a color palette in mind
you can use a free color palette generator from Canva.com/color-palette. Write down your color
titles and codes below:

Color #1: _______________ Code: _______________

Color #2: _______________ Code: _______________

Color #3: _______________ Code: _______________

Color #4: _______________ Code: _______________

Color #5: _______________ Code: _______________

Color #6: _______________ Code: _______________

Add the colors to your mood board by placing circles and labeling the colors with their color code
like I did in my sample above.

Here are some awesome examples of color palettes:

You can add other things to your mood board like typography if you’d like. Save and download
your mood board from Canva.com and save it somewhere on you computer that you’ll remember
later.

HOW TO BRAND YOUR HANDMADE BUSINESS // Crafting a Logo

As stated in my blog, you can certainly save money by purchasing a premade logo. The only
drawbacks about premade logos is that they are not fully customizable and another business may
have the same logo. If you’re planning on hiring a designer to design a professional logo for you,
use the boxes below to come up with a list of ideas or sketches.

• Etsy shop cover photo (3360 pixels wide x 840 pixels tall)
• Post cards (usually 6 inches wide and 4 inches tall)

Hello! I’m Christina. My husband Marc and I decided to open an Etsy shop in
early 2014. Back then, I never thought I would earn much money from our Etsy
shop. I certainly never thought that making a living off of Etsy was possible. But,
looking back now I’m so glad I gave it a chance. Since opening our Etsy shop
we’ve had over 10,000 sales and we’ve earned enough money that I was able to
quit my corporate job to work on the shop full time.

Because of the great experience I’ve had owning a shop on Etsy, I hope to use my
blog to educate other people about building a successful handmade business.
