QUARTER 3, WEEK 8
PROBABILITY OF UNION OF EVENTS

LEARNING COMPETENCY
At the end of this lesson, you must be able to find the probability of (A U B).

Introductory Concept
From your previous lesson, you have learned that union of events, A and B, denoted AU B,
is the collection of all outcomes that are of one or the other of the sets A and B, or of both of them. It
corresponds to combining descriptions of the two events using the word “or”. The shaded region in
the figure below shows the union of A and B.
A B

Remember!
The Additive Rule of Probability,
P(AUB) = P(A) + P(B) – P(A∩B).
Union of events (A U B)

Here is an example:

In the experiment of rolling a single die, find the probability of the union of the events E: “the number
rolled is even” and T: “the number rolled is greater than two.”

Solution:
The outcomes of E = { 2, 4, 6} and T = { 3, 4, 5, 6} and their intersection (E∩T) = { 4 , 6 }.

Using the Additive Rule of Probability, P(E U T) = P(E) + P(T) – P(E∩T), we know that,
𝟑 𝒐𝒖𝒕𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒔 𝟑 𝟒 𝒐𝒖𝒕𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒔 𝟒 𝟐 𝒐𝒖𝒕𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒔 𝟐
P(E) = = P(T) = = P(E∩T) = =
𝟔 𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒐𝒖𝒕𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒔 𝟔 𝟔 𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒐𝒖𝒕𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒔 𝟔 𝟔 𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒐𝒖𝒕𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒔 𝟔

𝟑 𝟒 𝟐 𝟓
Therefore, P(E U T) = + - = or 0.83 which means P(E U T) = { 2, 3, 4, 5, 6}.

In the following activities, you are going to find for the probability of events. Let’s go!
ACTIVITIES

Activity 1.
Consider the set of positive integers (I) from 1 to 30. Find the probability of events (AUB) when a
random number is drawn, given the following conditions. Choose and write your answer on the table
provided below.
1. A “is divisible by 5” and B “is a multiple of 10”
2. A “is divisible by 3” and B “is divisible by 4”
3. A “is an odd number” and B “is a perfect square number”
4. A “is greater than 20” and B “is a divisible by 6”
5. A “is the first five positive integers” and B “is the last five positive integers”

Activity 2.
Consider each situation and answer the questions that follow.
1. A bowl contains 15 chips numbered 1 to 15. If a chip is drawn randomly from the bowl, what is
the probability that it is
a. 5 or a number divisible by 3?
b. even or divisible by 3?
c. a number divisible by 3 or divisible by 4?
2. Dario puts marbles in box in which 14 are red, 12 are blue, and 18 are yellow. If Dario picks one
marble at random, what is the probability that he selects
a. a red or a yellow?
b. a red or a blue?
c. a blue or a yellow?

Activity 3
Solve the following.
The Municipal Health Office announced that there are 1500 COVID 19 vaccines that arrived
yesterday which are of different brands: 600 are Sinovac, 250 are Astrazeneca, 300 are Pfizer and
350 are Johnson & Johnson’s. Vaccination of the Municipal Health Officer will be conducted soon
to encourage vaccination among the municipal citizens. If a vaccine is randomly chosen, what is the
probability that the vaccine to be drawn is

a. Pfizer or Sinovac?
b. Astrazeneca or Johnson’s?
c. Sinovac or Astrazeneca?
