Mechanical Engineering
1) CAD
It stands for Computer-Aided Design. It's the second stage of design of any
product, the first one being, on paper design. It's an essential skill every
mechanical engineer should possess. There are many software for this
purpose, for example, the simplest and most widely used drafting software
called Autodesk AutoCAD. Other software those are widely used for 3D
modelling include Solidworks, Pro-E, CATIA, Autodesk Fusion 360, NX-CAD,
etc.. Autodesk products are free for students, just signup using student ID
and you are good to go.
2) CAE
CAE stands for Computer-Aided Engineering. It is the broad usage of
computer software to aid in engineering analysis tasks like FEA (Finite
Element Analysis), CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics), MBD(Multibody
Dynamics), DEM 9Discrete Element Method), FSI (Fluid-Structure Interaction)
and many more. There are many commercial packages that allow these
simulations for analysis. Different modules of ANSYS are widely used for FEA
and CFD analysis. COMSOL Multiphysics is also a famous software using
FVM for analysis. MSC Adams is widely used for MBD simulations.
Solidworks can also be used for these simulations but the freedom in the
analysis is quite limited with it. We would encourage you to try out FEAST
software based on the finite element method released by ISRO and
developed in India itself.
3) MATLAB-Simulink:
MATLAB is a widely used tool in the mechanical field for the mathematical
modelling of different physics and systems. It is one of the important
programming languages/environments used by mechanical engineers for
FEA, CFD, Dynamics & controls, and various other problems. Simulink is
mostly used for MBD and Control problems where you can easily formulate
the model using block diagrams. MATLAB is also widely used for Graphs
Plotting and post-processing of data.
4) CAM:
CAM stands for Computer-Aided Manufacturing which is the use of
Computer programming in the manufacturing of different products. In the
modern era, almost every production is shifting towards automatic or
semi-automatic manufacturing where CAM is usually adopted. Various CAM
simulation software is available to practice the programming of various
machines to obtain the desired product. Also, many CAD software have CAM
features inbuilt in them. They have step by step guide of the different
processes to be done in a sequence.
Electrical Engineering
2) Drives
And yes looking through Industrial mindset Drives play a massive role
because a large portion of the generation is consumed by induction motors,
as an electrical engineer one needs to have a brief knowledge regarding
Drives to reduce the losses and increase the industrial profit.
3) MATLAB - SIMULINK
This is used for mathematical analysis of circuits, analysis of power systems,
the stability of a system, mathematical modelling, and whatnot. This is an
essential skill every electrical engineer should at least possess.
5.) E-PLAN
E-PLAN is more like a new generation electrical schematics tool. Most
companies still rely on legacy tools or AutoCAD to draw schematics. If you
can be good at AutoCAD and Electrical Engineering, you can pick up EPLAN,
Zuken, E3, etc. pretty quickly. Remember, EPLAN is not a substitute for an
6.) Photovoltaics
As renewable energy is getting more attention from all the sections
nowadays, electrical engineers have a very bright scope in
the field of photovoltaics, either it is a designing field or installation one.
Civil Engineering
1) BIM
It stands for Building information modelling. It is an intelligent 3D model-based

so you can download it from its official website.
3) AutoCAD
AutoCAD is a commercial computer-aided design (CAD) and drafting software
application. Developed and marketed by Autodesk. AutoCAD is widely used in the
civil engineering field because of its ability to plan sites a lot easier than manual
drawings. The main thing is that if you want to draft any civil engineering structure
(2D, 3D) such as buildings, bridges, roads, drainage, pipeline, dams, intersection etc.
with accuracy, speed and that can be easily edited. It also decreases drafting errors
and produces better quality renderings. You can download the software from the
official website of Autodesk.
4) Revit
Revit is Building Information Modeling (BIM) software offering a multi-disciplinary
and collaborative approach to design and construction projects. Revit empowers
architecture, engineering, and construction professionals to produce consistent,
coordinated, and complete model-based designs for buildings and infrastructure. It
is a bit advanced than AutoCAD, it provides reduced field cycle time, Greater
Coordination and Collaboration, Increased On-site Renewable Opportunities, etc.
You can download it from the official website of Autodesk.
5) SUMO
SUMO is an open-source, highly portable, microscopic, and continuous traffic
simulation package designed to handle large road networks. It is mainly developed
by employees of the Institute of Transportation Systems at the German Aerospace
Center. This software is very user friendly and all the documentation and tutorials
are available within its official website of SUMO. You can create the road networks
by either HTML codes and terminal or with the SUMO desktop application. After
creating any type of road network, it provides the feature of simulating real-time
traffic or you can plan the traffic i.e. no of vehicles, pedestrians, speed of vehicles,
etc. In short, it’s a complete package for traffic simulation.
6) STAAD
STAAD or (STAAD.Pro) is a structural analysis and design software application
originally developed by Research Engineers International in 1997. In late 2005,
Research Engineers International was bought by Bentley Systems.STAAD.Pro is
one of the most widely used structural analysis and design software products
worldwide. It supports over 90 international steel, concrete, timber & aluminium
design codes. STAAD.Pro is interoperable with applications such as RAM
Connection, AutoPIPE, SACS, and many more engineering design and analysis
applications to further improve collaboration between the different disciplines
involved in a project.
7) SAP2000
SAP2000 is a software for designing a mathematical model of, and
mechanically analyzing civil structures, like everything ranging from
cable-stayed bridges to concrete walls. Civil engineers can begin with their
designs and then they can go for analysis and the software tells them how
the structure will behave under the applied conditions set by the operator.
Moreover, the software is able to optimize the structure and change the
materials used for different parts of the structure from the list provided by the
operator while creating the model.
8) ArcGIS
ArcGIS is a geographic information system (GIS) for working with maps and
geographic information. It is used for creating and compiling maps, compiling
geographic data, analyzing mapped information, sharing and discovering
geographic information, using maps and geographic information in a range of
applications, and managing geographic information in a database.
9) PLAXIS
PLAXIS is a program that has been developed specifically for the analysis of
deformation, stability, and flows in geotechnical engineering. The input
procedures enable the enhanced output facilities to provide a detailed
presentation of computational results. It is the most preferred program when
you have to work in the field of soil mechanics.
10) PRIMAVERA
Primavera is an enterprise project portfolio management software. It includes
project management, collaboration, and control capabilities, and integrates
with other enterprise software such as Oracle and SAP’s ERP systems. One
of the best civil engineering software courses. It helps easily prepare and
control project things to do. It optimizes resources allocation to a task. It
offers a clear field of vision of what's taking in the particular project.
Chemical Engineering
COMSOL and ANSYS have their respective Multiphysics software, with each
having their designated merits and demerits.
If one wants to know more about the COMSOL Multiphysics Software,
consider checking out the link below

If one wants to start from basics about how a Multiphysics software works
with its internal working, there is an excellent course by Cornell University on
Edx. The Course, “A Hands-on Introduction to Engineering Simulations,” is
based on ANSYS software.
One can also invest his time in doing project-based online courses on
platforms like Coursera and Edx. As SVNIT has subscribed for some Coursera
Courses, one can visit courses like Nanotechnology: A makers course and
Nanotechnology and Nanosensors: Part 1 & 2. Both of these courses start from
the basic level with explanations and demonstrations.
