GERUND TO-INFINITIVE
1. Cách sử dụng
• Là chủ ngữ của câu: dancing bored
him.
• Bổ ngữ của động từ: her hobby is
painting.
• Là bổ ngữ: Seeing is believing.
• Sau giới từ: He was accused of
smuggling.
• Sau một vài động từ: avoid, mind,
enjoy,...
2. Một số cách dùng đặc biệt
+ Những động từ sau được theo sau bởi
V-ing: admit, avoid, delay, enjoy,
excuse, consider, deny, finish, imagine,
forgive, keep, mind, miss, postpone,
practise, resist, risk, propose, detest,
dread, resent, pardon, try, fancy.
Ex:
- He admitted taking the money.
- Would you consider selling the
property?
- He kept complaining.
- He didn't want to risk getting wet.
+ Verbs + prepositions: apologize for,
accuse of, insist on, feel like,
congratulate on, suspect of, look
forward to, dream of, succeed in, object cheaply.
to, approve/disapprove of...
+ Gerund cũng theo sau những cụm từ
như:  3. Verb + Object + to V
- It's no use / It's no good...
- There's no point ( in)...
- It's ( not) worth ...
- Have difficult ( in) ...
- It's a waste of time/ money ...
- Spend/ waste time/money ...
- Be/ get used to ...
- Be/ get accustomed to ...
- Do/ Would you mind ... ?
- be busy doing something
- What about ... ? How about ...?
- Go + V-ing ( go shopping, go
swimming... )

Cách dùng To-infinitive:
1. Verb + to V
Những động từ sau được theo sau trực
tiếp bởi to-infinitive: agree, appear,
arrange, attempt, ask, decide,
determine, fail, endeavour, happen,
hope, learn, manage, offer, plan,
prepare, promise, prove, refuse, seem,
tend, threaten, try, volunteer, expect,
want,...
Ex:
- She agreed to pay $50.
- Two men failed to return from the
expedition.
- The remnants refused to leave.
- She volunteered to help the disabled.
- He learnt to look after himself.
2. Verb + how/ what/ when/ where/
which/ why + to V
Những động từ sử dụng công thức này
là:
ask, decide, discover, find out, forget,
know, learn, remember, see, show,
think, understand, want to know,
wonder...
Ex:
- He discovered how to open the safe.
- I found out where to buy fruit
- She couldn't think what to say.
- I showed her which button to press.
Những động từ theo công thức này là:
advise, allow, enable, encourage,
forbid, force, hear, instruct, invite,
order, permit, persuade, request,
remind, train, urge, want, tempt...
Ex:
- These glasses will enable you to see
in the dark.
- She encouraged me to try again.
- They forbade her to leave the house.
- They persuaded us to go with them.
1- V- bare theo sau tất cả các trợ từ (động từ khiếm khuyết), đt chỉ sự chứng kiến
can, could, will, shall, would, may, might, ought to, must, …. See, hear, …… let, ……..
2- Những động từ theo sau là "to verb" có 2 trường hợp:
2.a- [công thức: S+V+to V]:
afford, appear, ask, begin, choose, decide, expect, forget, hate, hesitate, intend, like, manage, neglect, pretend, propose,
regret, seem, swear, try, wish, agree, arrange, attempt, beg, care, consent, determine, fail, happend, help, hope, learn, love,
mean, offer, prepare, promise, refuse, remember, start, trouble, want, would like/ prefer……
2.b- [công thức: S+V+O+to V]:
advise, ask, be, command, encourage, forbid, get, help, intend, leave, mean, oblige, permit, prefer, recommend, remind, tell,
allow, bear, cause, compel, expect, force, hate, instruct, invite, like, need, order, persuade, press, request, teach, tempt,
trouble, warn, want, wish…..
3- Theo sau bởi "V-ing":
admit, advise, allow, anticipate, appreciate, avoid, confess, consider, deny, delay, detest, dislike, enjoy, escape, excuse, face,
fancy, finish, give up, imagine, invlolve, justify, keep on, mention, mind, miss, permit, postpone, quit, recommend, resent,
resist, resume, risk, save, tolerate, suggest, recollect, stop, pardon, can't resist, can't stand, can't help…..
Ngoài ra theo sau: by, be worth, it is no use, there is no use, it is no good …. cũng là V-ing
4- Những động từ theo sau gồm cả "to V" và "V-ing":
commence, begin, start, allow, advise, permit, recommend, continue, go on, hate, intend, like, love, mean, prefer, propose,
regret, remember, forget, study, stop, try, can't bear, need, require…….
Đa số những động từ trên khi theo sau là "to verb" hoặc "V-ing" sẽ có nghĩa khác nhau.
5. Những trường hợp động từ theo sau bởi cả V-ing và to-V.
a. Like
Like V-ing: Thích làm gì đó theo sở thích. # Like to do: Làm việc đó vì nó là tốt và cần thiết, muốn làm.
b. Prefer
Prefer V-ing to V-ing: Thích làm gì hơn làm gì
Prefer + to V + rather than (V) : Thích làm gì hơn làm gì
c. Mean Mean to V: Có ý định làm gì.
Mean V-ing: Có nghĩa là gì.
d. Need Need to V: Cần làm gì
Need V-ing: Cần được làm gì (= need to be done, dùng để chỉ ý bị động)
e. Stop Stop V-ing: dừng làm gì (dừng hẳn)
Stop to V: dừng lại để làm việc gì
f. Remember/ forget/regret Remember/forget/regret to V: nhớ/quên/tiếc sẽ phải làm gì
Remember/forget/regret V-ing: nhớ/quên/tiếc đã làm gì
g. Try
Try to V: cố gắng làm gì
Try V-ing: thử làm gì
h. See/hear/smell/feel/notice/watch
See/hear/smell/feel/notice/watch + Object + V-ing:  chỉ chứng kiến 1 phần của hành động.
See/hear/smell/feel/notice/watch + Object + V:  chứng kiến toàn bộ hành động.
i. Used to
Used to V: đã từng/thường làm gì trong quá khứ (bây giờ không làm nữa)
Be/Get used to V-ing: quen với việc gì (ở hiện tại)
j. Advise/allow/permit/recommend
Advise/allow/permit/recommend + Object + to V: khuyên/cho phép/ đề nghị ai làm gì.
Advise/allow/permit/recommend + V-ing: khuyên/cho phép, đề nghị làm gì.
k. Go on 
Go on to do sth: làm việc khác.
Go on doing sth: tiếp tục làm công việc đang làm 
6. Khi hai hành động xảy ra cùng lúc, động từ chính giữ nguyên, động từ phụ để dạng V-ing.
 Ex: You cant sit watching T.V all day.
7. Khi 2 hành động ngắn xảy ra không đồng thời, hành động này sau hành động kia, hành động xảy ra trước thì động từ
để V-ing. 
Ex: Opening the bottle, I poured the drinks.
Chú ý nếu là 2 hành động dài, ta phải dùng thì hoàn thành. 
Ex: Having repaired the car, Tom took it out for a road test.
