Miss Myers

Kindergarten

Common Core Standards:

Read common high-frequency words by sight (e.g., the, of, to, you, she, my, is, are, do, does).
Compare (without using inequality symbols) two numbers between 0 and 10 when presented as
written numerals.
Fluently add and subtract within 5
Lesson Summary:
Students will play a fun scavenger hunt using QR codes. Each QR code will have a simple math
problem on them and they will have to use their iPads to scan the correct answer.

Estimated Duration:
About 100 minutes long, spread out into two equal classes.

Commentary: There will be a prize at the end of the scavenger hunt for whoever wins. The
only challenge I anticipate happening is other students wanting the prize and getting upset, but
that will encourage a good discussion on fairness.

Instructional Procedures:
Day 1:
For the first 10 minutes, we will have a quick review on our basic addition/subtraction where I
will put example problems on the board and the students will solve them quietly to themselves.
The next 10 minutes we will go over the answers. The next 10 minutes I will explain the rules of
the scavenger hunt and how to properly use the iPads and app. The next 20 minutes students
will begin playing the scavenger hunt and scanning the codes. The last 5 minutes, I will go
around and help the students who have seemed to struggle the most.
Day 2:
The first 10 minutes, we will review our addition/subtraction again. The next 5 minutes I will
re-explain the rules of the scavenger hunt. The next 30 minutes the students will play the
scavenger hunt with their iPads. The last 15 minutes I will give the winner their prize and work
with the students who needed help during the activity.

Pre-Assessment:
To pre-assess, we will do a review of our simple addition/subtraction problems for the first 10
minutes of class. Students will solve the problems I put on the board quietly, then we will go over
the answers and see what they already know.
Scoring Guidelines:
I will observe the students' skill levels with the pre-assessment by making a count of the
class average. Hopefully the majority of the class will get most of the problems correct with
only a few errors.
For formative-assessment, I will be observing the students during the scavenger hunt and
take note of any who are struggling or will need extra help when the activity is over.
Post-Assessment:
For our post-assessment, we will have a 10 question quiz with our simple addition/subtraction
problems and see if our scores have improved since the pre-assessment.
Scoring Guidelines:
It will be a scoring system with percentages so I can see how well the average is for the
entire class as well.

Differentiated Instructional Support

If some students are moving very quickly through the scavenger hunt, I will ask them to help out
their classmates who are struggling. If there are students who are really far behind I will step in
to help them out, but I want the students to mainly complete this on their own.
Any students who are struggling with the material can also have a small group with me where
we can go much slower through online flashcards on their iPads.

Extension
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WT_wvvEvkw4 This link will take you to a funny video about
addition for the students to watch. It also keeps the "scavenger hunt" theme because it's about
pirates!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QkPa9V2wtZs This is the same kind of video as above
except this is subtraction.

Homework Options and Home Connections

I would encourage parents to download "Quizlet" and use the flashcards and study games to
help their child fully understand addition/subtraction, especially if they need extra help.

Interdisciplinary Connections
We can also start to talk about the idea of multiplication with this activity.
