6.0. QUALITY CONTROL PROCEDURE

6.1. JOB SITE PREPARATION : The following points are to be checked prior to
delivery of material for erection of pipe racks:
6.1.1. Location.
6.1.2. Job-site: clean level and ready.
6.1.3. Material storage location for structural steel members.
6.1.4. Accessibility for delivery of trucks and offloading equipment’s.
6.1.5. Maneuvering room for equipment.
6.1.6. Utilities available.
6.1.7. Soil condition.
6.2. FOUNDATION AND ANCHOR BOLTS
6.2.1. Accurate foundation dimensions and proper anchor bolts locations are critical
to the overall erection procedures and shall be accurate to within a tolerance of
5 mm.
6.2.2. Prior to erection of the structural steel columns, the leveling plates or shim
packs will be fixed with the same grout to use at pedestals and leveled
correctly by the surveying people.
6.3. ERECTION OF STRUCTURAL MEMBERS
6.3.1. Erection method and procedure shall be carefully selected, as the
techniques of raising elements vary all the way from erecting a small
clear space and end wall element in units. The erection methods use for
erecting the larger clear spans and the modular elements in sections
depend upon strictly on the type of elements, the availability of
equipment, the experience level of crews and the individual job
conditions.
6.3.2. The variation of these factors precludes the establishment of a firm or
specific set of erection rules and procedures.
6.3.3. Erecting the elements:
6.3.3.1. Erection drawing shall be reviewed, by to include permanent
bracing, and shall be determined accordingly. The elements
shall be assembled on ground above the pieces of lumbers,
including fastening side girt angles connectors the assembled
element shall be erected, anchor bolts and nuts shall be
sufficiently tightened.
6.3.3.2. Temporary bracings are required to prevent the elements
buckling. Similarly other elements are erected and it shall be
held in place with hoisting equipment until the required bolts

and side girt are installed. The bolts are to be tightened to the
required torque. All the bracing horizontal and cross bracing are
to be installed prior to remove the temporary bracing.
6.3.4. Before any further proceeding the first bay shall be made plumb and
square.
6.3.5. Similarly all other structurals shall be erected and must be braced during
erection.
6.3.6. Erection shall not be commenced if weather conditions are unsettled or strong
winds imminent.
6.3.7. Flame cutting of the steel base plates will not be allowed. Reaming of not more
than 1mm is allowed.
6.4. INSTALLATION AND TIGHTINING OF STEEL FASTENERS
6.4.1. Handling and storage of fasteners: shall be protected from dirt and
moistures at jobsite. Fasteners shall not be cleaned of lubricant that is
present in as delivered conditions.
6.4.2. Calibrated wrench tightening: when calibrated wrench is used for
installation, they shall be set to provide a tension not less than 5 percent
in excess of the minimum tension specified.
6.4.3. The torque wrench shall be calibrated at least once each working day for
each bolt diameter length and grade using fastener assemblies that are
being installed in the work.
6.5. QA/QC CHECK LIST: After completing the entire Erection works (Structure wise) the
final inspection of the Structure shall be conducted.
6.5.1. All bracing in position and tightened.
6.5.2. All bolts in place and high-straight bolts strengthen to correct tension.
6.5.3. Any missing bolts.
6.5.4. Touch up or any damaged paints.
6.6. ADDITIONAL POINTS
6.6.1. Erection or site civil engineer / supervisor to ensure the foundation has
been released for erection.
6.6.2. Secure access ladders to steel columns while still on the ground.
6.6.3. Begin erection of steel structure, piece, by piece on the ground,
preliminary tightening of structure component.
6.6.4. Surveyor to submit alignment survey report to site engineer / QC
inspector prior to releasing the structure for final alignment/tightening.
6.6.5. Bolt tightening shall be as per AISC Part 6 using one of the following
methods:
