MEASUREMENT

Ms. Drumm

First grade/Math
Common Core Standards:

1. MD.1 Order three objects by length; compare the lengths of two objects indirectly by using a third
object.

1. MD.2 Express the length of an object as a whole number of length units by laying multiple copies of a
shorter object (the length unit) end to end; understand that the length measurement of an object is the
number of same-size length units that span it with no gaps or overlaps. Limit to contexts where the
object being measured is spanned by a whole number of length units with no gaps or overlaps.

Lesson Summary:

In this lesson, we will learn about Measurement and how to put measurement to order from shortest to
longest or tallest. Learn how to measure with a ruler. Learning how to measure with inches and
centimeters.

Estimated Duration:
Five 45 minutes class session
Commentary:
The teacher will have a series of fun questions about the topic to hook the students. One to see where
they are at and make it fun for them to learn the material that I’m about to give them.

Instructional Procedures:
Day 1:
For the first 25 minutes, we will have a note pocket/paper and the teacher will explain about
measurement and the different measurements that there are.
5 minutes the student will have time to write down ideas that they would like to use for the class project.
In the last 15 minutes, there will be a worksheet (measure it!)
Day 2:
For the first 20 minutes, we will be talking more about the different things and ways students can
measure with. There will be a note pocket that students will have them fill out.
The rest of the time they will work on the class project, they will walk around the classroom with a ruler
and measuring tape, and a piece of paper and write down what the idea is and the measurement next to it.
Day 3:
For The first 20 minutes, we will be working on a worksheet (Measuring lengths with a ruler)
For the next 20 minutes, there will be the different worksheets that the student will need to pick one that
they will do in class, and then they will take the other one home and turn it in the next day.
Last 5 minutes teacher will see where all the students are at on their class project.
Day 4:
For the first 10 minutes, there will be a coloring worksheet where they are given measurements and they
have to color in the correct measurement to the right color.
For the last 35 minutes, the student will work on the class project and ask for help if needed.
Day 5:
For the first 5 minutes, students will make sure the class project is done and turn it in.
Last 40 minutes there will be a test about measurement and then when the student is done there will be a
pre-activity for the next week’s lessons.
Pre-Assessment:
On day one I will ask my student to write down pieces in our classroom that they want to see which one
is smaller or bigger. Each day we will work on our class project.
Scoring Guidelines:
To score what students know the teacher will see how much the student participate and how much effort
they put into it.
Post-Assessment:
The assessment will be done in class and the student will make a picture of each idea and write down the
measurement in order of smallest to biggest.
Scoring Guidelines:
I will be scoring the assessment at of 5 points and it will go off of how much effort they put into
it.

Differentiated Instructional Support

● Students who are gifted and need more of a challenge will be prompted teacher will give the
students harder worksheet and teacher will go over more measurement Like Foot and meter.

● Students who need more help with the lesson will be seated with people who have a good
understanding of the topic. The teacher will have time when students are working so they can
pull a few students into a small group so they can have more time with them.

Homework Options and Home Connections

We will have a page of notes each day to understand the work. Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. One
about inches and centimeters, one about seeing which measurement is smaller and bigger, and telling the
difference between 3 objects in length.

Interdisciplinary Connections

This lesson is based on Measurement but can be used in other ways of learning. As we continue through
math measurement will be used with gallons, Quart, ounces, cups, and pints. This will allow for a greater
understanding of the concept and many other lessons.
