Dear learners,

I hope you will enjoy using this Self-directed Module in General Chemistry 2.
In this module you will be able to cite and differentiate the types of catalyst.

A catalyst is a substance added to a reaction that changes the speed of

chemical process (but most of the time increases the reaction rate) without getting
consumed in the process. Catalysts typically speed up a reaction by reducing the
activation energy or changing the reaction mechanism. Enzymes are proteins that act
as catalysts in biochemical reactions.

In this module, you will learn how a catalyst increases the rate of reaction
without being used up itself in the reaction and you will able to identify the different
types of catalyst. Be ready to learn how catalyst work in a chemical reaction.

Situational Analysis: Read related technology brought about by catalyst and answer
what is being asked?

1. USING TECHNOLOGY: Catalytic Converter

https://www.google.com/search?q=image+of+catalytic+converter

The exhaust systems of cars today are equipped with catalytic

converters that uses rhodium and platinum as catalysts. No more than 4-9
grams of these precious metals are used in a single converter. This catalyst
speeds up reaction of three types of toxic compounds given off the cars. The
rhodium and platinum as catalysts do not enter into a chemical reaction, but
the rough surface of the catalyst provides a high-surface area for the reaction
to occur. Catalytic converters change unburned hydrocarbons, carbon
monoxide, and nitrogen oxides into harmless compound.

Why is it not necessary to add more rhodium and platinum to a catalytic

converter as these substances are used?

2. Science and Arts: Fresco Painting

https://www.google.com/search?q=fresco+painting&rlz
Fresco Painting is a mural painting technique that involves painting with
water-based paint directly onto wet plaster so that the paint becomes an
integral part of the plaster. The word fresco is an Italian for “fresh”. Fresco
painting makes use of chemical reaction that causes color pigment to
crystalize within the plaster as it dries. As the plaster dries, carbon dioxide in
the air turns the lime to calcium carbonate, crystalizing the pigments. The color
then becomes part of the plaster itself.
The process of forming a carbonate is sometimes referred to as
“carbonation”, this term usually refers to the process of dissolving carbon
dioxide in water. Calcium carbonate and natural pigments make the medium
of Fresco the most environmentally safe medium. Only pigments that resist the
action of lime can be used. The pigments are usually earth color. Frescoes
have been painted for hundreds and hundreds of years.
What is the role of carbon dioxide in air in Fresco Painting? What type
of catalytic mechanism exist in Fresco painting? Why?

https://www.google.com/search?q=image+Haber%27s+process&rl

The Haber process, also called the Haber–Bosch process, is an artificial

nitrogen fixation process and is the main industrial procedure for the production
of ammonia today. In agriculture, ammonia is produced with the help of
iron catalysts. The ammonia is most commonly used in the field to make
fertilizers which are essential for plant growth.
What type of catalytic mechanism is involved in Haber’s or Bosch process
in producing ammonia? Explain why? Please refer to the information given on
page 16, types of catalyst.

C. Elaborate

https://www.google.com/search?q=elaborate+image&rlz

A catalyst is a substance that speeds up a reaction and does not appear in the
overall chemical equation. A catalyst offers an alternative pathway by which a reaction
occurs. The effect of catalysts can be understood in terms of the collision theory. The
presence of catalyst lowers the activation energy needed to overcome the reaction to
occur and forms another activated complex. For the reaction

A2+B2 A2B2 2AB.

activated complex

The reaction is the ordinary pathway by which A2 and B2 react to form 2AB. The
activated complex is A2B2. If the collision is ineffective A2B2 reverts back to the
reactant. If there is a sufficient energy of the reacting molecules, A 2B2 is formed
immediately. The higher the energy needed to form the activated complex, the slower
the rate of reaction. In the presence of catalyst (C), the reaction proceeds in different
pathway as shown below.

A2 + C A 2 C + B2 2AB + C

The catalyst C is generated at the end of the reaction. The alternative pathway
will need a lower activation energy. At lower activation energy, more collision will have
sufficient energy to pass over the energy barrier. The reaction proceeds faster
because a greater fraction of collision is effective at any given point.

1. What type of catalyst is presented in the previous discussion/lecture? Why?

• ____________________________________________________________

2. Why activation energy is important to start a chemical reaction?

• ____________________________________________________________

3. What is the relationship between catalyst and activation energy?

• ____________________________________________________________

4. How do you call the catalyst that slows down chemical reaction?
• ______________________________________________________________

13
www.shsph.blogspot.com
There are four other types of catalyst:
1. Homogeneous catalysis refers to reactions where the catalyst is in the same
phase as the reactants. An example of this type of catalysis ivolving liquid in the
conversion of persulphate and iodine into sulphate ion and iodine:
( S2O82- + 2I- 2SO42 + I2)
2. Heterogeneous catalysis, when the catalyst and the reactant are in different
phases. For example, the catalyst might be in solid phase while the reactant is in liquid
or gas phase, like the catalytic converter in gasoline or diesel-fueled cars (Oxidation
of hydrocarbons (unburnt and partially burned fuel) to carbon dioxide and water.

3.Heterogenization method of homogeneous catalytic system is the

application of two liquid phases with no limited or temperature regulated miscibility of
two phases or a solid phase in the liquid phase. It is a modification of homogeneous
catalyst to “break” the uniformity among the molecules of catalyst and the product(s)
by rendering them in separable phases to allow their separation.
An example of heterogenized homogeneous catalytic reaction.

Immobilization of a water soluble phosphine by hydrogen bonding of the hydrated

sodium-sulfonate groups to the surface of silica.
https://pubs.rsc.org/en/content/articlehtml/2011/cy/c1cy00174d
4.Biocatalyst is a substance, such as enzymes or hormone, that initiates or increases
the rate of chemical reaction. An enzyme is a biological catalyst that accelerates a
chemical reaction without altering its equilibrium. Enzymes are present in the body and
are responsible for reaction that extract energy from food we eat. They increase the
speed of reaction essential to life. Without these enzymes, reactions would occur
extremely slowly and life may not be possible. General example of biocatalyst being
the yeast-mediated transformation of sugar into alcohol, acids, or gases. However, the
most frequent example of biocatalyst are as follows:

https://www.google.com/search?q=most+frequent+example+of+biocatalyst&rlz

14
www.shsph.blogspot.com
Other types of catalyst are the following:

1. Positive catalyst, decreases the activation energy by accepting an alternative

path for the reaction to occur. The rate of reaction is decreased. Some reaction
uses positive catalyst. Example: 2KClO3 2KCl(s) + 3O2(g).

2. Negative catalyst, decreases or slows down the rate of reaction in rusting, or

decomposition of certain substances and aging. The negative catalyst is known
as inhibitors. Example: 2H2O(l) 2H2O(l) + O2(g).

3. Auto-catalyst-the products formed in the reaction act as a catalyst for the

reaction to proceed. Example:
Process Catalyst

ammonia synthesis iron

sulfuric acid manufacture nitrogen(II) oxide, platinum

cracking of petroleum zeolites

hydrogenation of unsaturated hydrocarbons nickel, platinum, or palladium

4.Induced catalyst is a substance that influences the speed of reaction which is

not possible under ordinary condition. A chemical reaction that increases the
rate of another chemical reaction is called induced catalysis.( Example:
Sodium arsenite solution is not oxidized by air). Thus the oxidation of
sodium arsenite is induced by oxidation of sodium sulphite. Examples are:
Air
• NA2SO3 Na2SO4
Air
• Na2 SO3 No reaction

• Activation energy is the minimum quantity of energy which the reacting species
must possess in order to undergo a specified reaction

• Catalyst is a substance added to reaction that changes the speed of chemical

process (but most of the time increases the reaction rate) without itself
undergoing any permanent chemical change.

• Enzyme is a type of protein that speeds up metabolic reactions in plants and

animals without permanently changed or destroyed.
• Homogeneous catalysis occurs when the reactants, products and catalyst are
all in the same phase. Often the reactants, products and catalyst areall
dissolved in the same solvent. Due to environmental considerations, the solvent
is often water. This is then reduced back to the original form by reaction with
the other reactant.

• Heterogeneous catalysis is catalysis in which the catalyst does not take part
in the reaction that it increases. With heterogeneous catalysis, the catalyst
and the reactants may be in different phases, for example gas-phased
reactions which are catalyzed by solids.

• Heterogenization of homogeneous catalytic system is a modification of

homogeneous catalysts to “break” the uniformity among the molecules of the
catalyst and the product by rendering them in separate phases to allow their
separation.

• Biocatalyst is the substance, such as enzymes or hormones, that initiates or

increases the rate of chemical reaction.

• Positive catalyst decreases the activation energy by accepting an alternative

path for the reaction to occur.

• Negative catalyst decreases or slows down chemical reaction by increasing

activation energy needed for the reaction to occur.

• Auto-catalyst the product formed in the reaction act as catalyst for the
reaction to proceed.

• Induced catalyst is a substance that influences the speed of a reaction which

is not posible under ordinary condition.
