The Teacher As A PERSON and As A Professional: SPARK Your Interest
This Episode will provide you a chance to observe teachers in their workplace at
school in order to answer the questions asked.
So, what are the professional competencies that every teacher should have?
You will find these in the matrix that follow.
Now you are ready to identify if the enumerated characteristics are found
among the teachers you are going to observe.
There are two observation activities in this Episode. Activity I will identify
the Personal Characteristics of the Teacher and Activity 2 will identify the
Professional Competencies of the Teacher.

observe the same In case you will not change your teacher to be observed the
same teacher will be your sample for both Activity I and Activity 2. Aside from
direct observation, you will also do a Survey in Activity 2.
ANALYZE
Did you learn from your observation of the teacher? Now let us analyze the
information that you have gathered.
Yes, I believe I have the potential to be a good teacher eventually. So many children want
love, comfort, and attention, and I aim to be the person who lifts them up when no one
else has. I want to show my pupils, not just tell them, that with dedication and hard effort,
they are capable of becoming anything they choose. I wish to make my classroom a safe
haven for the students, where collaboration and empathy are acknowledged as
passionately as a good test result. I think that with compassion and understanding, I can
help kids reach their full potential.
R REFLECT
Good teachers are role models, whether in school, at home or in the community.
From teachers that you had from elementary to college, did the personal qualities
that they possess, help you learn better as a student?
Identify one personal characteristic of your model teacher that has made a
great impact in your life as a learner. Reflect and describe how this quality
influenced you.
Humility. This teacher sets great objectives for herself while being humble and
eager to share her accomplishment. Her qualities had a significant influence on my
life as a student. True humility is characterized by both generosity of heart and
serene self-assurance. In education, it is realizing that, while one may know a lot,
one may not know everything. In this day and age of blatant self-promotion,
instructors must be humble. And it was this trait that encouraged me to become a
modest teacher in the future.
Procedure:
1. Secure a permit to observe and conduct a survey.
2. Request the following information from the teacher:
a. Name
b. LET License No
c. Evidence of Professional Growth (Master or Doctorate, Seminars
attended, etc.)
3. Request a co-teacher or the head (only one of the 2) to answer the
checklist/rating scale about your sample teacher.
4. Answer the same survey instrument yourself.
5. Compare the answer of the co-teacher or that of the head with your answer
on the survey. In what items do you have the same answer?
6. Show the results in a summary table.
Competencies of the Professional Teacher: A Special Case
Dear Ma'am/Sir:
I am a future teacher and I would like to know the characteristics of a professional teacher. I will be very glad if
you answer the survey form about your co-teacher Yves Michelle Ganzan.
I will keep in confidence your identity. However, please allow me to use the data in my lesson. This is a
requirement in our course, Field Study 1.

ANALYZE
Did you learn from your observation and interview on teacher's professional
competences? Now let us analyze the data.
2. Did your answers to the survey form coincide with the answers of the co-
teacher or head of the teacher you observed? Why?
Yes, it does. We both observed the teacher strength and weakness in the
same way.
R REFLECT
Now, it is time to reflect on Activity 2.
1. As a future teacher, the results imply that I should look within myself for the
traits that I need to develop in order to be a great teacher. This training has
taught me that there are many things I didn't know or hadn't considered
before embarking on this trip. As a prospective teacher, I intend to work
relentlessly and reflect on my particular teaching philosophy, which
represents my principles, values, and aspirations as a teacher and as a
person. I hope to be someone that my pupils can look up to and who will
help them reach their life objectives in the best way possible.
2. If all the teachers teaching today possess the professional characteristics and
competencies as the teacher/teachers observed then learners will be
motivated to study more about education Students who are motivated by
their professors may do incredible things, and that drive nearly always
sticks with them. Inspiration may also take numerous forms, such as
mentoring a student through the academic year and short-term objectives,
or encouraging them toward their future job. Many working professionals
may name a specific instructor as the one who cultivated their passion of
what they presently do and attribute their success to that educator years
after graduation.

Narrative (about the personal and professional characteristics of the teacher)
This teacher is powerful in the sense that she understands the subject matter that she teaches
her students and that she organizes, develops, and administers school curriculum properly. Her
drawback is that she occasionally fails to use evaluation tools for kids, but she can always find a
substitute. This instructor is never pessimistic. She feels she can do a good job as long as she gives it
her all in every aspect. This teacher's most prized property is the accomplishments of her pupils,
which she cherishes. Her major purpose is to inspire her pupils to succeed as individuals in society
and the nation as a whole. It is a benefit to have a good teacher who can have an integrated
relationship with the students. A good teacher should be a mentor, a philosopher, a guide, a friend,
and, most importantly, an adoptive parent to the students. I consider myself fortunate to have met
this teacher.
