Easy Crocheted Popcorn Garland

A quick and easy beginner project that looks amazingly realistic!

You will need:

 acrylic worsted weight yarn in off-white

 red beads with large hole (pony beads work well)
 crochet hooks, sizes G and 3 (2.10mm)
 yarn needle

Set up:

Using yarn needle, thread beads onto free end of yarn. Plan to use about 12 beads per foot of
garland

Stitch:

Chain 9.

*Starting in second loop from hook, 2 sc in each loop for a total of 16 stitches. This will form a
spiral of about two turns. If necessary, shape the chain into a spiral with your fingers.

Now for the fun part! You will use two separate slip stitches to form the spiral into a popcorn
and to walk the yarn to the end of the string for the next popcorn. First, secure the beginning of
the spiral to the middle of the spiral by inserting hook into outer edge about halfway up, sl st.
For variation, you can sl st through the inner edge or in any yarn loop somewhere in the middle
of the spiral. Next, insert hook into outer edge of spiral at or near the tip, sl st to secure. Coming
in a stitch (or two or three) from the tip will alter the finished look of the popcorn. This variety is
good and adds to the natural look. In fact, the more variations in the form of twists and folds
you can work in, the more realistic your popcorns will look. If you are unhappy with the result,
it’s only two slipped stitches to remove and try again.

Chain 9 + extra chains to equal the size of your bead. Pony beads require 1 extra chain. Larger
beads may require two. Variation: to place two popcorns together, chain just 9 with no extra. *

Add bead:

Slide a bead along the yarn down to your work. Insert the smaller crochet hook alongside the
yarn from the skein through the bead towards your work, catch the loop and pull it through.
Slide the bead down to the previous popcorn.

Repeat with popcorns and beads until garland is desired length. To add length, hide the join under a
bead.

*********

Quick reference: Ch 9, *2 sc per loop starting at second loop from hook (16 st total); secure end to
middle with sl st; secure middle to tip with sl st; chain 9 (+1 or other), add bead, * repeat between *.
