1. Objectives.

The main objective is to:

 Develop a guide for safety while doing lifting works.

2. General Safe Work Practices.

2.1 Use of Lorry Cane

2.1.1 The respective lorry driver shall ensure that his vehicle and its
crane are maintained in good working condition.

2.1.2 The lorry driver shall ensure that all lifting gears and appliances
used are in good condition and free from any patent defect.

2.1.3 The lorry driver to ensure a free access and no other obstruction
which Jun pose a danger to the lifting operation.

2.1.4 The lorry driver shall check the access to ensure that there is no
soft ground or the ground is undermined by excavation or sewer,
etc.

2.1.5 The lorry crane shall only be used in open spaces or spaces with
sufficient ventilation as the exhaust gases from the vehicle Jun
cause suffocation in a confined space.

2.1.6 The lorry driver shall ensure that the crane is used for loading and
unloading of materials only. Never lift people with the crane,
unless it is equipped with a special platform for lifting people for
works at height.

2.1.7 Never use the crane during a thunder storm.

2.2 Lifting Operation

2.2.1 Ensure that there is no unauthorized person within the operating


range of the crane.

2.2.3 All personnel working on site shall put on their safety helmet.

2.2.3 The driver shall ensure that he put on the vehicle parking brake to
prevent the vehicle from sliding during the lifting operation.

2.2.4 The driver shall ensure that the ground is sufficiently firm and the
outrigger legs must not be able to sink in.

2.2.5 If the ground is not firm enough, use support plates under the
outrigger legs for additional support. Check the support plates as it
comes under load, that it is not being pushed into the ground or
bent under load.

2.2.6 The driver shall ensure that he do not lower the outrigger legs on
the edge of an embankment, soft shoulder, slope, etc. Lower them
only on a flat firm surface.

2.2.7 The outrigger extension beams shall be fully extended on both


sides of the vehicle to prevent tipping over of the crane.

2.2.8 The driver shall ensure that he can see the outrigger legs when he
is operating them. Always operate them from the side of the legs
concerned but do not stand in front of the hydraulically operated
outrigger legs.

2.2.9 The driver shall be extra cautions not to lower the outrigger legs
onto his own foot.

2.2.10 The outrigger legs should never be operated if the crane has a
load.

2.2.11 The driver shall ensure that he stand on the side of the vehicle
opposite the unfolding direction of the crane when he is unfolding
the crane.

2.2.12 The driver must always ensure that he can see the load which he is
to lift. If the view of the load is inadequate, have someone else to
guide.

2.2.13 The driver must always watch out for the safety of the person
guiding him and ensure that the rigger had moved away from the
load before attempting to lift the load.

2.2.14 The driver must never move the vehicle with a suspended load on
the crane.

2.2.15 The driver must never allow anyone to walk or stand under a
suspended load or below the crane boom system.

2.2.16 The driver must ensure that he lift the load from the ground before
starting to slew and do not tow the load over the ground.

2.2.17 The crane boom should never be slew at full speed.

2.2.18 During hoisting of long bulky items, use a tag line to control the
load.

2.2.19 The rigger shall ensure that all loads are properly secured before
allowing it to be lifted and in the course of lifting or lowering; the
load is properly balanced to prevent toppling.

2.2.20 The driver/site supervisor shall ensure that the lorry crane is not left
unattended with its power on or with a suspended load.

2.2.21 The driver shall ensure that no overloading of the crane is allowed
at anytime and its safe working load is strictly adhered to.

2.2.22 After the end of the crane operation, always fold up the crane fully
to its storage area of the vehicle.

2.2.23 After withdrawing the outrigger legs, always lock them in position.

2.2.24 The driver/rigger should be attentive and physically suitable for the
lifting operation. They should not be under the influence of alcohol,
drugs or medicines which could have an effect on their hearing,
sight, attentiveness or reaction.

2.3 Lifting Gears and Appliances

2.3.1 The lorry crane driver shall ensure that all his lifting gears and
appliances are in good condition and free from patent defect.

2.3.2 The lorry crane driver/store manager shall ensure that all defective
lifting gears and appliances are discarded immediately.

2.3.3 No lifting gears or appliances shall be loaded beyond its safe


working load, except by an Authorized Examiner for the purpose of
testing such gears or appliances.

2.3.4 All lifting gears or appliances shall be tested and examined by an


Authorised Examiner before its use and a test certificate issued.

2.3.5 All lifting gears or appliances shall be thoroughly examined by an


Authorised Examiner at least once a year.

2.3.6 All relevant reports of test conducted must be kept and make
available for inspection.
