Approximate Calculation of Areas and Volumes

Part #1 : Essay writing

1. Explain on essay writing the deadweight scale to determine displacement and deadweights at various drafts in seawater.

Part #2 : Problem solving

1. Calculations based on the following problems provided and need to be answer below:
1.1 A box shaped barge has length 46m, breadth 8.8m and floats at a draught of 3.6m in salt water (RD 1.025).
Calculate the displacement
1.2 What will be the displacement of the box if it is towed into dock water of RD 1.012?

Part #1 Answer

The deadweight (Dwt) scale provides a method for estimating the additional draft or for
determining the extra load that could be taken onboard when a vessel is being loaded in water
of density less than that of salt water. The main use of the Dwt scale is to observe Dwt against
draft. Weight in tonnes remains the same but the volume of displacement changes with a
change in density of the water in which the ship floats. The salt water and fresh water scales
relate to these changes. To calculate the Deadweight tonnage figure, take the weight of a
vessel that is not loaded with cargo and subtract that figure from the weight of the vessel
loaded to the point where it is immersed to the maximum safe depth. Deadweight is the actual
amount of weight in tonnes that a vessel can carry when loaded to the maximum permissible
draught (includes fuel, fresh water, gear supplies, catch and crew). DISPLACEMENT MASS.
Displacement mass is the total weight of the vessel, i.e.: Lightship weight + deadweight =
displacement mass.
