Class Discussion:

(“What does this poem reveal about this time in history? What does Joaquin’s story reveal? How does he
feel?” Why?”)
Follow up Assessment
In groups of 2 address these questions to be presented to whole class:
1. “From the poem or from the student description, tell me what the key themes are. Be
specific! (What are the authors asking for, what are they demanding? For example, better
schools etc…)
2. “What similarities or differences do you see between the Chicano Movement and the
Black Civil Rights Movement?”
3. “Whose voices are not being heard in this narrative?” (Women, Lesbian Gay Bisexual
Transgender Queer (LGBTQ))
4. How is the work’s structure unified? (in terms of poetry flow and the way the poem is
outlined)
5. What recurring patterns (repeated words, images etc) can you find? What is the effect of
this pattern?
6. What is the theme or meaning? How does repetition reinforce the theme? How does the
author’s diction (words) reveal the meaning?
7. Is there a relationship between the beginning and end of the story?
8. How does the work reflect the hopes, fears and expectation of an entire culture?
You and your partner will pick a park of the poem to analyze further and create a representation of that
part of the poem.
