KNUCKLE JOINT

• A knuckle joint is used to connect two rods which are under the action of tensile loads.

• However, if the joint is guided, the rods may support a compressive load.
KNUCKLE JOINT

• Applications:
• The link of a cycle chain,
• Tie rod joint for roof truss,
• Valve rod joint with eccentric rod,
• Pump rod joint,
• Tension link in bridge structure
• Lever and rod connections of various types.
DIMENSIONS OF KNUCKLE JOINT

• d1 = d
• Outer diameter of eye,
• d2 = 2 d
• Diameter of knuckle pin head and collar,
• d3 = 1.5 d
• Thickness of single eye or rod end,
• t = 1.25 d
• Thickness of fork,
• t1 = 0.75 d
• Thickness of pin head,
• t2 = 0.5 d
DESIGN OF KNUCKLE JOINT

• Modes of Failure:
• Failure of the solid rod in tension
π
• P= × (d) 2 × σt
4
• Failure of the knuckle pin in shear
π
• P=2× × (d1) 2 × τ
4
• Failure of the single eye or rod end in tension
• P = (d2 - d1 ) t × σt
• Failure of the single eye or rod end in shearing
• P = (d2 - d1 ) t × τ
• Failure of the single eye or rod end in crushing
• P = d 1 × t × σc
DESIGN OF KNUCKLE JOINT

• Failure of the double eye or forked end in tension

• P = (d2 - d1 ) 2 t1 × σt
• Failure of the double eye or forked end in shearing
• P = (d2 - d1 ) 2 t1 × τ
• Failure of the double eye or forked end in crushing
• P = d1 × 2 t1 × σc
DESIGN OF KNUCKLE JOINT

• Failure of the knuckle pin in bending

< σallow. (For Checking)

EXAMPLE 1

• Design a knuckle joint to transmit 150 kN. The design stresses may be taken as 75 MPa in
tension, 60 MPa in shear and 150 MPa in compression.
• Solution:
• Failure of the solid rod in tension
π
• P = × (d) 2 × σt
4
π
• 150 (103) = × (d) 2 × 75
4
• d = 50.4 or 52 mm
• d1 = d = 52 mm
• d2 = 2 d = 2 (52) = 104 mm
• d3 = 1.5 d = 1.5 (52) = 78 mm
• t = 1.25 d = 1.25 (52) = 65 mm
• t1 = 0.75 d = 0.75 (52) = 39 mm or 40 mm
• t2 = 0.5 d = 0.5 (52) = 26 mm
EXAMPLE 1

• Failure of the knuckle pin in shear • Failure of the single eye in crushing
π • P = d1 × t × σc
• P = 2 × × (d1) 2 × τ
4
π • 150 (103) = 52 × 65 × σc
• 150 (103) = 2 × × (52) 2 × τ
4 • σc = 44.4 MPa < 150 MPa (OK)
• τ = 35.3 MPa < 60 MPa (OK)
• Failure of the single eye in tension
• P = (d2 - d1 ) t × σt
• 150 (103) = (104 - 52 ) 65 × σt
• σt = 44.4 MPa < 75 MPa (OK)
• Failure of the single eye in shearing
• P = (d2 - d1 ) t × τ
• 150 (103) = (104 - 52 ) 65 × τ
• τ = 44.4 MPa < 60 MPa (OK)
EXAMPLE 1

• Failure of the double eye or forked end in tension

• P = (d2 - d1 ) 2 t1 × σt
• 150 (103) = (104 - 52 ) × 2(40) × σt
• σt = 36 MPa < 75 MPa (OK)
• Failure of the double eye or forked end in shearing
• P = (d2 - d1 ) 2 t1 × τ
• 150 (103) = (104 - 52 ) × 2(40) × τ
• τ = 36 MPa < 60 MPa (OK)
• Failure of the double eye or forked end in crushing
• P = d1 × 2 t1 × σc
• 150 (103) = 52 × 2(40) × σc
• σc = 36 MPa < 150 MPa (OK)
EXAMPLE 1

• Failure of the knuckle pin in bending

• σt = [150 (103)/2 × (40/3 + 65/4) ] / [π/32 × (52)3]

• σt = 160.7 MPa > 75 MPa (Not Safe in bending)
