Careless Use of Social Media

GOOD MORNING MA’AM, AS I START MY SPEECH, I WOULD LIKE FIRST TO

INTRODUCE MY SELF- I AM RISA MIGUEL FROM BSAC 1A
AND TODAY I AM GOING TO TALK ABOUT THE CARELESS USE OF SOCIAL
MEDIA

Where does people utilizes social media? What are the impacts of careless use of social
media?

The advent of technology leads social media in its full use. People utilize this platform
for various purposes such as keeping in touch with friends and families, networking
career opportunities, finding people across the globe with mutual interests and sharing
thoughts and emotions.

Despite of its serviceability, social media pose risks. Behind its perks are social media’s
dangers. It is true that social networking has also its bad impacts. First, social media
can affect our privacy. If we became careless, our profile informations that includes our
photos, status updates, and comments could reveal too much. It might reveal such
things as where we live, when we are (and are not) at home, where we work, or where
is our school. Our address along with a brief post such as, “We leave for vacation
tomorrow!” is enough to tell a thief where and when to strike. In addition, details like e-
mail address, date of birth, and phone number could leave us open to harassment,
bullying, or identity theft. Yet, many people readily divulge such information on their
social networking page. We tend to forget that once we post something online, it is in
the public domain. Even if we specify that our status updates are to be shared with
“Friends Only,” we have no control over what those friends might do with the
information. Really, anything posted on a social network should be viewed as public or
as material that can easily be made public.

Second, social media can affect our time. It can consume our time and distract us from
more vital activities. For example, a woman named Kay said, “the more contacts you
have, the more time you will spend social networking and the more addictive it can be.”
Ellise a teen, also added that “It’s hard to get off a social networking site, even when
you don’t really like it. It’s almost liked an obsession.” Time is a commodity that we
cannot afford to waste, social media slowly consumes our time more than we expected.

Third, social networking can affect our reputation. What we post on a social network
carves out a reputation for us that may be difficult to erase. Yet many seem oblivious to
this potential danger. It seems that when we go on a social network, we lose our sense
of reason, because sometimes we say things that we normally wouldn’t say. Some don’t
realize that with one distasteful post, our good reputation can be ruined. Damaging
your reputation on a social network can have long-range consequences. Moreover,
Grown-Up Digital states agree on it when it said “Stories are legion of social network
site users losing their jobs or being turned down for new jobs because of what they
have posted online.”

Lastly, social media can affect our friendships. Our friends influence us on how we think
and act. Thus, it only makes sense to be selective about whom we befriend on a social
network. Some, accept dozens or even hundreds of friend requests from people they
hardly know — or do not know at all. Sooner or later, they will discover that not all on
their list of friends are good associates. That is why we have to allow people to be our
friends in social media if we know them personally.

Social media was created for a very a good purpose, but still, we have to be wise on
using it for us not to waste and ruin our privacy, time, reputation and friends.
