Grade: Kindergarten Subject: Small group Date: 3/2/22

reading (blue and red

groups)

Topic: We will read through the text as a Objectives:

small group and be able to find the ● I can stretch out words that I do
picture that matches the text and glue it not know.
in the book. ● I can match text to pictures.

Standards:
● RL.K.1: With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about the key
details in a text.
● RL.K.4: Ask and answer questions about unknown words in a text.
● RL.K.7: With prompting and support, describe the relationship between
illustrations and the story in which they appear (e.g., what moment in a story
an illustration depicts).
● RL.K.10: Actively engage in group reading activities with purpose and
understanding.

Materials:
● Reading text packet (Kim Helps & Sam and Tam)
● Pictures to match the text (already cut out for red group)
● Scissors
● Glue stick
● Sight word flash cards
● Letter cards

Structure/Activity:
● The first thing we will do to get them thinking is a quick review. The blue group
will do sight words and the red group will do letter sounds. 2-3 minutes.
● I will first explain to students that we are going to be reading a short story
today.
○ The blue group will read Kim Helps
○ The red group will read Sam and Tam
● I will then explain that the author “forgot” to put pictures in the book and we
are going to have to help him finish the book. (Red group I will pre cut their
pictures.)
● Before we begin reading go over quickly with the groups these things:
○ Red group only: go over blending and stretching out words C-A-T: CAT.
○ Blue group only: go over the “bossy e” and what the bossy e means
sometimes. (Means that the vowel will make the long sound not the
short sound. Example: table).
● Students will take turns reading each page. After a page is read, we are all
going to talk about which picture would best go with that page. As we do this
we will talk about what we see in the picture that matches up with the text. We
will also discuss why we think some other pictures do not match up with the
text.
○ Red group will need guidance stretching out words.
● We will complete the above step for every page.
● Extensions:
○ The blue group will work on sentence writing. I will hand them a sheet
of the lined paper and “challenge” them to write 1 sentence. They then
will read them outloud to the group. (This group LOVES reading out
loud.
○ The red group will work on sentence writing with me. We will come up
with a sentence together and work on writing it as a group. We will
blend our words together and write what we hear. We will then read it
outloud as a group. (Andrew will need me to write the word in
highlighter so he can trace it.)

Assessment:
● Were the students able to read the text?
● Did they stretch out unfamiliar words?
● Did they pick the pictures that matched with the text?
● Were they able to explain their thinking?

Differentiation:
● The red group has a lower level book compared to the blue group.
● The red group will have their pieces pre cut for them, so we can focus more on
the reading.
● Red group will begin with a quick letter sounds review game.
● Blue group will begin with a sight words game

Notes:
● Red group:
○ Students: Gabe, Andrew, Noah, Ariana, Arbrielle
○ Gabe has been very unpredictable lately. He has some rough days.
However, whenever he is having a good day he is very involved and
smiley.
○ Andrew is a newer student. He has never been in a school setting until
a couple weeks ago. He had never had any previous experience with
writing, so he needs a lot of guidance while writing. However, he
catches onto things quickly.
○ Noah is in speech. Sometimes it sounds like he is not saying the correct
sound when he actually is. This is something he does get embarrassed
about from time to time.
○ Ariana needs a lot of guidance while doing things. She also needs a lot
of thinking time, so it is best to give her an extra amount of time when
asking her to do things.
○ Arbrielle is not in a small group a lot. She is on a behavior program, so
she spends a lot of time not in the classroom. She is fairly energetic,
but also needs a lot of guidance when she does things.

● Blue group:
○ Students: Ana, Rowen, Jayce, Jason, and Nori
○ Ana is very sharp and has amazing reading skills. She is always very
curious and asks questions.
○ Rowen is the most shy with his reading skills. He is able to do it, but is
more nervous and not as confident while reading.
○ Nori is always very involved and loves to read aloud. She is always one
of the first to volunteer to read.
○ Jayce is more involved than others some days. However, he does have
great reading skills and does well when he does read.
○ Jason is very involved in a small group. He has some great insight
during small groups and reading.
