CONFLATION
‘Socially responsible science’ is more than ‘good
science’ (Bird, 2014) • accurate and reliable research
• oppose misuse or abuse in the application
of research findings
• attend to both the limitations and the
foreseeable impacts of their work
• participate in discussions and decisions
regarding the appropriate use of science in
addressing societal issues and concerns
• bring their specialized knowledge and
expertise to activities and discussions that
promote the education of students and
fellow citizens
• enhance and facilitate informed decision-

Activity 1 – Research on Issues in S&T
Review the ten emerging ethical dilemmas of 2018 compiled
by the John J. Reilly Center for Science, Technology, and Values
of the University of Notre Dame. Choose one from these
emerging ethical dilemmas and research about the nature of
this S&T innovation. Discuss the highlights of your research.
Use the following guide questions in preparing your output:
Guide questions:
• What is the S&T issue all about?
• What factors or events led to the introduction of this S&T?
• What ethical dilemmas does the introduction of the S&T pose?
• Why is it important to question the moral and ethical issues
surrounding this S&T?
• In the face of this new S&T innovation, why is it important to study
Science, Technology, and Society?
