A. OBSERVATIONS (BEFORE ENGINE DISMANTLING)

ONLY IN CASE OF HOC OBSERVATION

Compression pressure - Manufacturers Specification: Dry……………… Wet…………………………

Observed Values:
Compression Test – Dry Cyl.No.1 Cyl.No.2 Cyl.No.3 Cyl.No.4 Cyl.No.5 Cyl.No.6
Readings
Compression Test – Wet Cyl.No.1 Cyl.No.2 Cyl.No.3 Cyl.No.4
Readings
Visual Observations:

A. Smoke / Sound / External Leakages

For Smoke:
Is smoke observed only at the time of first starting and then goes away after running for
some time? Yes / No.
Check colour of smoke – Blue/Black/White
Check for oil droplets in smoke – Yes/No
Check for smoke colour change during acceleration/deceleration – change / no change.
Check for oil level in sump – Ok / Less (mention as indicated on dipstick)
Check smoke after readjusting carburetor settings – improvement / No improvement
Spark plug condition – Ok / Not Ok (mention, if clogged, Wet, Colouration etc.)

For Sound:
Is sound mechanical – Yes / No.
Is sound of fuel detonation / knocking – Yes / No.
Does sound increase on acceleration / deceleration – Yes/No.
Does sound reduces after running for 5 minutes – Yes / No.

External Leakages
Thereafter check for external leakages – mention place of leakage / quantity of oil dripping.

Poor performance at low and idle speeds

Check carburetor air screw adjustment – OK / Not OK
Check if air is leaking past intake – Yes/No
Perform spark test – OK / Not OK
Check choke valve – Open / Close
Check ignition timing – OK / Not OK

Poor Performance at High Speed

Check fuel flow from the tank – OK / Not OK
Check the carburetor for clogging – OK / Not OK
Check valve timing – OK / Not OK
Check ignition timing – OK / Not OK
Check choke valve – Open / Close
Check valve spring – OK / Not OK

Note: 1.If mechanical sound comes during acceleration / deceleration engine need
dismantling.
2. If smoke does not reduces on carburetor adjustment, engine should be dismantled.

Before opening the engine:

Check the air cleaner system. Check for dirt entry – Yes / No.
Remove head and manually crank the engine and see if the oil comes on the piston top or not – Yes/No
Observations (after engine dismantling)
Check if the piston is loose in the block or not – Tight / Loose / Sliding
Are scratches observed on piston skirt – yes / no
Does piston top has hard carbon deposits – Yes / No
Does liner have scratches – Yes/No
Does valve tip show visual wear – Yes / No.

Cylinder bore wear

Check for cylinder bore Taper wear and ovality – mention values (mention specified & actual values).
Check for scratches / carbon deposits on the ridge area. (if multi cylinder make a table)

Piston / Piston Ring Wear

Check for wear of piston OD by checking piston liner clearance ( by feeler gauge) and ring closed gaps
– mention values (mention specified & actual values)
If bore and piston is found to be within specifications and scratches within acceptable limits, only rings
shoud be changed.

Engine Valve – Under head carbon deposition.

Hard carbon deposition observed under the valve under head portion – Yes / No.
