GENERAL PHYSICS I Semester: FIRST SEM (SECOND QUARTER) Grade
Level: GRADE 12 Teacher: JAYCEL MARIE L. MONTON

Direction: Do what is asked in every part. Keep your work neat and legible.

Part 1. Problem Solving

1. How much would a 189.0-kg person weigh on Mercury?

g in mercury is 3.59 m/s²

Given mass is 189.0 kg

W=mg
W=(189.0kg) (3.59m/s2)
W=678.51N

2. How much would your 34.0-kg dog weigh on Neptune?

g in Neptune is 14.07 m/s²

Given mass is 34.0 kg

W=mg
W=(34.0kg) (14.07m/s2)
W=478.38N

3. How much would a 22.0-kg bag of groceries weigh on the sun?

g in Neptune is 274.13 m/s²
Given mass is 22.0 kg

W=mg
W=(22.0kg)(274.13m/s2)
W=6030.86N

4. How much would a 175-kg. football player weigh on Venus?

Weight On Earth 2
Weight On Venus= 2

9.81 m/ s

Answer :158.23 kg

5. Which is greater, the force exerted by the Earth on the Sun, or the force exerted by the Sun on the
Earth? Why?

The Sun exerts exactly the same amount of force that the Earth exerts on the Sun. This
is summed in the equation

m1 m2
F=G
r2

this is the equation that calculates the force between two objects based on their mass,
the distance between them, and the gravitational constant.

The fact that the two forces are equal are also clearly stated in Newton’s Third Law of
Motion, that “For every action, there is an equal and opposite re-action”. Forces
always come in pairs, equal and in opposite directions.

6. Two students are measuring the Gravitational Attraction between each other. One student weighs
120 kg. The other student weighs 108 kg. Calculate the gravitational pull they have on each other.

Mass of student 1, m 1= 120 kg

Mass of student 2, m2= 108 kg
Let they are at a distance of 10m

We need to find the gravitational pull they have on each other. The gravitational force
acting between two objects is given by:

m1 m2
F=G
r2

−11 120 ×108

F=6.67 ×10 × 2

Answer :r =2.2× 10−2

7. If you dropped a ball while standing on the surface of Katar, at what rate would it accelerate
toward the ground?

The acceleration of gravity on the surface of a planet can be found by using the following
formula:

GM
g= 2 , where
r

G=6.67∙ 10 m kg s is the gravitational constant

M =6.39 ∙ 10 kg is the mass of the planet

Substituting the numbers into the formula, we find

( 6.67 ∙ 10−11 ) ( 6.39 ∙1023 kg )

9. Calculate the gravitational pull between the Earth and the Moon.

Mass of Earth (mₑ) = 5.972E24 kg

Mass of Moon (mₘ) = 7.34767309E22 kg

Distance between Earth and Moon (d) = 384,400 km = 3.844E8 m

10. What is the gravitational field strength of the Earth 55,300 meters from the surface of the Earth?

6.67 ×10−11 (5.98 ×1024 )

Answer : 9.8 N /kg

Part 2. Critical Thinking
1. If there is an inward force acting upon an earth orbiting satellite, then why doesn't the satellite
collide into the Earth?

The force between the satellite and Earth is gravitational force, which works in the inward
direction.
2. Why is it not possible to place a satellite in a geostationary orbit above a point on the earth that is
not on the equator?

For any point off the equator, they're not moving around the center of the earth.
They're moving in a circular path around some point on the axis of rotation, above or below
the center, but not the center. So, no orbit can remain above that point because an orbit must
have the center of the earth as its center.

3. Why are geostationary satellites of little value as weather satellites in Polar Regions?

Geostationary satellites are design revolve around equator line of earth or to any specific
position like land, county or region. So, it revolves with same time period as earth do. So,
these satellites never need to cross any poles, that's why geostationary satellites are of little use
for pole studies.
