Read each paragraph and present the ideas found therein using a graphic
organizer. Each paragraph should have its own graphic organizer.

I.
Facebook started when a Harvard University student named Mark
Zuckerberg opened Facemash on October 28, 2003. This website was a
type of "hot or not" game which allowed users to compare photos of two
students side-by-side and choose who is hot or not. At that time, the site
was exclusive for Harvard students. In January 2004, Zuckerberg began
to write codes for a new website known as "theFacebook." On February 4,
2004, Zuckerberg launched TheFacebook.com and expanded to other
universities by March 2004. In the summer of 2004, Facebook was
incorporated. By the end of 2005, Facebook expanded to universities in
the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. And now, it has 1.35 billion active
users.

▪ I chose this graphic organizer because a timeline is a type of graphic organizer

that shows specific events in sequence, usually with dates, in a linear fashion.
Timelines are particularly useful for studying or reviewing history, because the
timeline will visually display major events over a period of time.

II.
Facebook has more addicting features compared to Twitter. For
example, Facebook, unlike Twitter, allows users to post stories that
vanish after 24 hours. Facebook also has fan pages for celebrities – a
feature which Twitter does not have. Finally. Facebook has filters like
Edgerank which automatically monitors your activity and hides content
posted by your friends on Facebook which might not be your interest.
Nevertheless, both Twitter and Facebook allow real-time interactions and
reconnection with friends.

▪ I chose this graphic organizer because the Venn diagram is one of the most
popular graphic organizers that is used to illustrate relationships between
different groups of things. It also has been widely used in many subjects like
math, science and writing.

III.
The causes of Facebook addiction are both internally and externally induced.
According to Dr. Brent Conrad, Facebook fulfills our social needs in the digital world.
Another feature of Facebook that induces addiction is that it quantifies friends. Facebook
will tell you how many "friends" you have in a specific period. This can lead you to think
that the more friends you have, the more popular you are. Facebook also has combined
features of gaming and socializing. These games tend to focus on online social
interactions. Finally, Facebook is a boredom buster. If you have nothing to do, Facebook
allows you to check other people's status, chat with friends, and post your favorite quotes
and lines.
According to CNN, the first sign that you are already addicted to Facebook is if
you become an insomniac because of using it. If you see that you are staying up late at
night more and more just to go on Facebook, start thinking about whether or not you are
addicted to it. Another symptom of Facebook addiction is if you use it for more than an
hour per day. You can use some applications to track this. Third, you become obsessed
with "friending" your ex-boyfriend or girlfriend. Ignoring your work is another symptom
of Facebook addiction. instead of writing your reports and proposals, you tend
to sneak time on Facebook. What is worse is if you do this during work hours. The last but
not the least symptom of Facebook addiction is if leaving the site causes you much stress
and anxiety.

▪ I chose this graphic organizer because a Mind Map is a diagram for representing
tasks, words, concepts, or items linked to and arranged around a central concept
or subject using a non-linear graphical layout that allows the user to build an
intuitive framework around a central concept.

IV.
To treat this kind of addiction, Dr. Conrad suggests that the first thing
you should do is to admit that you are addicted to Facebook and that you need
to address it. Then, keep track of how much time you spend using Facebook
per day. As noted earlier, using it more than an hour a day is not a good sign.
You can use applications that control your Facebook use. If you cannot help
but use Facebook, limit the number of feeds and updates you receive and
purge your Facebook friends if there are too many already. Remember, quality
is better than quantity. Finally, turn off Facebook notifications, Receiving
notifications will tempt you into logging in to your Facebook account.

▪ I chose this graphic organizer because a flowchart is a type of diagram that

represents a workflow or process. A flowchart can also be defined as a
diagrammatic representation of an algorithm, a step-by-step approach to solving a
task.
