Course Number: Math 1 Course Title: Fundamentals of Mathematics
Topic Title: Division of Whole Numbers Activity Title: Finding the quotient
Objective: To divide whole numbers
Reference: Beyond Math By Loly Ong, Angelyn R. Lao, Maria Jenny Tan, & Judy W. Sy

CONCEPT NOTES
Division is an operation that divides a value called dividend to a value called divisor, which is repeatedly
subtracted from the dividend. The result is called quotient. If it is not perfectly divisible, then have a remainder.
Steps to Consider in Division
Step 1: Write the problem in the form: 𝑑𝑖𝑣𝑖𝑠𝑜𝑟√𝑑𝑖𝑣𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑑
Step 2: Determine the largest number which when multiplied to the divisor is less than or equal to the dividend.
(from left to right)
Step 3: Multiply the value determined in step 2 to the divisor and write the answer below the dividend.
Step 4: Subtract the value obtained in step 3 from the dividend.
Step 5: Carry down the next place value.
Step 6: Repeat step 2 to step 5 until there is no more place value to be carried down.
Example 1: Find the quotient of 12 332 and 15.
822 𝑅 2
Solution: 15√12 332
− 120
33
− 30
32
− 30
2
Hence, we solved that 12 332 ÷ 15 = 822 𝑅 2.
Checking Answer of Division
Multiply the quotient to the divisor and add the remainder. If the answer from the above computation is equal to
the dividend, the quotient is correct.
Example 2: Given 54 700 ÷ 13.
a. Find the quotient and remainder (if any).
b. Check the answer.
4207 𝑅 9
Solution: a. 13√54 700 b. Check: 4207 quotient
− 52 × 13 divisor
27 12 621
− 26 + 4207
10 54 691
− 0 + 9 remainder
100 54 700 dividend
− 91
9
Hence, we solved that 54 700 ÷ 13 = 4 207 𝑅 9.
MASTERY PRACTICE: Find the quotient of the following, and then check for your answer. Show all your solution.

1. 759 ÷ 29 2. 12121 ÷ 11 3. 70 000 001 ÷ 65

CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING/EXERCISE/ASSIGNMENT
