STAR WARS

FILM ANNOTATION

In Star Wars, the author has created an image of Rey - a

girl who on the outside always pretends to be strong,
stubborn, sincere, or to be more precise, she created a solid
shell for herself to protect her. A girl who is always driven
and always longs for a family. The creation of a character like
Rey in a movie with elements of science fiction and science
helps the film to come closer and the audience can easily
absorb the emotional circuit of the film.
Letting Rey initially appear as an orphan, but later
reveal that she is Emperor Palpatine's granddaughter - the
villain of the Skywalker Saga. This is a twist of the film
that surprises the audience. Moreover, Rey is the next
generation of villains, but she is fighting for justice,
becoming a warrior, and showing the fact that a hero can be
anyone, from anywhere, they are called heroes by definition
from actions and thoughts, not race. Family, the source is a
nest, a place of peace for us to rely on, but it does not mean
that family defines who they are.
More than that, it is easy to see that Luke's descendant
is Rey. Rey's background easily makes others skeptical of her,
but the author himself wanted to develop her in such a way to
emphasize whether the origin of the hero really matters "an
outsider and epic person”(1)
Besides, through the shaping and characterization as well
as the film situations, the audience also saw the skillful
integration of the author in the issue of feminism and gender
equality. The actress Daisy Ridley said that the reason she
tried her best to be cast as Rey was because when she looked
at this character, she also felt that she had a part in it,
the character could influence her thoughts perception and
beyond that the audience could not follow the film as if it
had nothing to represent. “And like I’m just an actress, I’m
not changing the world. But to be part of something that is
perhaps groundbreaking and to be part of like a movement of
women, not just in film, all over the world and all different
sectors.(2)“
The image of Rey burying the two shining temples(3) serves
as an end to the sufferings of the Skywalker lineage as well
as an affirmation that we cannot choose the family we are born
into, but we can choose the family to love and stick together.
Rey appears with a yellow blade and goes by the name "Rey
Skywalker", the beginning of a new generation. This is a key
point in the Star Wars Universe.
Along the way, she also has another family, a more
complete family, the family of Luke and Leila that teaches her
many things, even though both know who Rey really is. It is
because of their tolerance, trust and love that Rey always
tries her best, and not a second, not a minute she stops
fighting the demon inside her.
