iv. Write the steps clearly as they carry marks.
v. Fq denotes the finite field of q elements.
1. Let a = P + Q + R (modulo 2) and b = Q + R (modulo 2). Consider a code
with a generator matrix G as follows: (assume the transmissions are over a binary

(a) Find the corresponding parity check matrix H for this code. (0.5)
(b) Construct a standard array for this code. (1)
(c) Find the minimum distance of the code. Is the code MDS? Is it perfect? Give
reasons. (1)
(d) Give the error-detection and error-correction capability of the code. (1)
(e) What is the probability of undetected error for this code? (1)
(f) Based on the standard array decoding, find the probability of decoder error. (1)
(g) Write the syndrome-coset leader map for this code. (1)
(h) If the received vector is 110000, to which codeword is it mapped to based on
the standard array decoding? (1)
2. (a) Construct the finite field F16 using the irreducible polynomial f (x) = x4 + x + 1
over F2 , with α4 = α + 1. Provide a table containing the polynomial notation,
the power notation and the vector notation for all the 16 elements of the field. (1.5)
(b) If c = (P + R) (modulo 7) + 6 and d = (Q + R) (modulo 7) + 6, then obtain
the power notation of the following field elements:
(i) αc + αd (ii) α3 + α + 1 + αd in F16 .
