OBJECTIVES:
K. Identify steps in solving inverse trigonometric
functions and trigonometric equations.
S. Construct a step by step process in solving inverse
trigonometric functions and trigonometric
equations.
A. Challenge themselves in solving real-life
problems involving inverse trigonometric
functions and trigonometric equations.
LEARNING COMPETENCY:
I. WHAT HAPPENED
Thales of Miletus (circa 625–547 BC) is known as the founder of geometry.
The legend is that he calculated the height of the Great Pyramid of Giza in
Egypt using the theory of similar triangles, which he developed by measuring
the shadow of his staff. Based on proportions, this theory has applications in
several areas, including fractal geometry, engineering, and architecture.
Often, the angle of elevation and the angle of depression are found using
similar triangles.

DISCUSSION
The following are real-world problems that can be solved using the
trigonometric functions. In everyday life, indirect measurement is used to
obtain answers to problems that are impossible to solve using measurement
tools. However, mathematics will come to the rescue in the form of
trigonometry to calculate these unknown measurements.
Example 1. A boat is docked at the end of a 10 foot pier. The boat leaves the
pier and drops anchor 230 feet away 3 feet straight out from shore (which is
perpendicular to the pier). What was the bearing of the boat from a line drawn
from the end of the pier through the foot of the pier?
Solution:

Example 2. The intensity of a certain type of polarized light is given by the
equation I= I0 sin 2θ cos 2θ. Solve for θ.

Example:
𝜋 𝜋
T(X) = 19 sin (6 𝑥 − ) + 53 models the average monthly temperature of
2
the water in a mountain stream, where 𝑇(𝑋) is the temperature (℉) of the water
in the month x, (x=1 is January).
a. What is the temperature in October?
b. What two months are likely to give a temperature of 62.4?
Solution:
a. Consider October as (x=10)
π π
T(10) =19 sin ( x- ) +53
6 2
= 43.5 ℉
π π
│T(x) =19 sin ( 6 x- 2
) +53
π π
62.4 – 53 = 19 sin ( 6 x- ) +53 – 53 --- ( Subtract both sides by 53)
2
π π
9.4 = 19 sin ( 6 x- ) --- ( divide both side by 19)
2
π π
0.4947 = sin ( 6 x- )
2
-1 -1 π π
sin (0.4947) = sin (sin ( 6 x- )) --- ( take the inverse sign of both sides)
2
-1
sin (0.4947) = 0.5175 0r 2.6241 --- ( giving you 2 angles)
Given 2 angles:
π π π
First angle : 0.5175 = ( 6 x- ) --- (add both sides by )
2 2
π
2.0883 = x
6
π 6
2.0883 = x ( ) ---(multiply by reciprocal 6/π )
6 π
4

Second angle: 2.6241 = ( 6 x- ) --- (add both sides by )

π 6
4.1949 = x ( ) ---(multiply by reciprocal 6/π )
