FOREWORD

This Self Learning Kit for General Mathematics is

designed specifically for Grade 11 students in the Senior
High School. Thus, a modest background in grade school
mathematics is important, written in a precise, readable,
and conventional manner to facilitate students’
understanding of the subject.
It is aligned with the BEC of the Department of
Education following the prescribed MELCs (Most Essential
Learning Competencies.
It has the following features proven to be valuable
aids to learning Mathematics even at home.
What happened
This section contains pre-activities like review of the
prior knowledge on the simple and compound interest.

What You Need To Know (Discussion)

This section contains real-life applications of
inverse trigonometric functions and trigonometric
equations with their corresponding solutions that clearly
illustrate the applicability of a mathematical concept.

What Have I Learned (Evaluation/Post Test)

The exercises contained in this section are guaranteed
to build mathematical comprehension, skills, and
competence. These serves as a diagnostic tool to identify
the learner`s prior knowledge, and the areas of strength
and weaknesses.

2
OBJECTIVES:
K. Identify steps in solving inverse trigonometric
functions and trigonometric equations.
S. Construct a step by step process in solving inverse

functions and trigonometric equations.

LEARNING COMPETENCY:

Solve situational problems involving inverse

trigonometric functions and trigonometric equations
(STEM_PC11T-IIi-2)

I. WHAT HAPPENED
Thales of Miletus (circa 625–547 BC) is known as the founder of geometry.
The legend is that he calculated the height of the Great Pyramid of Giza in
Egypt using the theory of similar triangles, which he developed by measuring
the shadow of his staff. Based on proportions, this theory has applications in
several areas, including fractal geometry, engineering, and architecture.
Often, the angle of elevation and the angle of depression are found using
similar triangles.

In earlier sections of this module, we looked at trigonometric identities.

Identities are true for all values in the domain of the variable. In this section, we
begin our study of trigonometric equations to study real-world scenarios such
as the finding the dimensions of the pyramids.

In the other hand, we will also be discussing on the inverse of

trigonometric functions and computed for the value of a function at a number
in its domain.

DISCUSSION

Applications of Inverse Trigonometric Functions

The following are real-world problems that can be solved using the
trigonometric functions. In everyday life, indirect measurement is used to
obtain answers to problems that are impossible to solve using measurement
tools. However, mathematics will come to the rescue in the form of
trigonometry to calculate these unknown measurements.

Example 1. A boat is docked at the end of a 10 foot pier. The boat leaves the
pier and drops anchor 230 feet away 3 feet straight out from shore (which is
perpendicular to the pier). What was the bearing of the boat from a line drawn
from the end of the pier through the foot of the pier?

Solution:
Figure 1.a

2
Example 2. The intensity of a certain type of polarized light is given by the
equation I= I0 sin 2θ cos 2θ. Solve for θ.

Solution:

Applications on Trigonometric Equations

Trigonometry simply means calculations with triangles (that’s where the

tri comes from). It is a study of relationships in mathematics involving lengths,
heights, and angles of different triangles. The field emerged during the 3rd
century BC, from applications of geometry to astronomical studies.
Trigonometry spreads its applications into various fields such as architects,
surveyors, astronauts, physicists, engineers and even crime scene investigators.
Any equation that involves trigonometric expressions is called
trigonometric equation.

3
Example:
𝜋 𝜋
T(X) = 19 sin (6 𝑥 − ) + 53 models the average monthly temperature of
2
the water in a mountain stream, where 𝑇(𝑋) is the temperature (℉) of the water
in the month x, (x=1 is January).
a. What is the temperature in October?
b. What two months are likely to give a temperature of 62.4?
Solution:
a. Consider October as (x=10)
π π
T(10) =19 sin ( x- ) +53
6 2
= 43.5 ℉
π π
│T(x) =19 sin ( 6 x- 2
) +53

π π
62.4 – 53 = 19 sin ( 6 x- ) +53 – 53 --- ( Subtract both sides by 53)
2

π π
9.4 = 19 sin ( 6 x- ) --- ( divide both side by 19)
2

π π
0.4947 = sin ( 6 x- )
2
-1 -1 π π
sin (0.4947) = sin (sin ( 6 x- )) --- ( take the inverse sign of both sides)
2
-1
sin (0.4947) = 0.5175 0r 2.6241 --- ( giving you 2 angles)

Given 2 angles:
π π π
First angle : 0.5175 = ( 6 x- ) --- (add both sides by )
2 2
π
2.0883 = x
6
π 6
2.0883 = x ( ) ---(multiply by reciprocal 6/π )
6 π

3.9884 ≈ x --------------------------- April

4
π π π
Second angle: 2.6241 = ( 6 x- ) --- (add both sides by )
2 2
π
4.1949 = x
6
π 6
4.1949 = x ( ) ---(multiply by reciprocal 6/π )
6 π

8.0117 ≈ x --------------------------- August

∴ April and August were likely to give a temperature of 62.4°.

III. WHAT HAVE I LEARNED

POST TEST
Solve the following problems:
1.The distance from a boat to lighthouse is 100 feet and the lighthouse is 120
feet tall. What is the angle of depression from the top of the Lighthouse to the
boat?
2. You are standing 100 feet from an arch that is 68 feet tall. At what angle do
you have to look up to see the top of the arch? Assume you are 5 feet tall.
3. The angle of elevation of the top of a church to a point 100 feet away from
the base is 60°. Find the height of the church.

4. Raul’s Heating Oil is very seasonal, with sales in the winter far exceeding
sales in the summer. Monthly sales can be modeled by
π π
𝑆(𝑋) = 1600 cos ( 6 x- 2
) +5100

Where 𝑆(𝑋) is the average monthly sales in the month x.

a. What is the monthly average sales in July?

b. For what months of the year are sales less than $4000?
